Monte Christo Recipe
An awesome sandwich very pleasing to everyone.

Ingredients
  • 6 slices cooked turkey
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 6 slices cooked ham
  • 12 slices white bread buttered on one side
  • BATTER:
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/3 cup water
  • 1 egg

Directions
  1. Make sandwiches. Buttered bread, turkey, swiss cheese, ham buttered bread. Cut each sandwich into quarters. Use wooden pick to hold quarters together.
  2. For batter. Mix dry ingredients together. Add egg and water mix well. Dip each sandwich quarter into batter and fry in hot oil until golden brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with strawberry jam. Eat while hot.

Many thanks, I used to eat this as a small girl and loved it, never found a recipe for it that used proper batter rather than just beaten egg. Thank you, thank you, thank you!


You have my High 5 on this...Glad you posted this using the batter coating instead of just dipping the sandwich in egg. Great post.


I make my family go out to eat at Bennigan's every once in a while just so I can have a Monte Cristo. They serve theirs with raspberry jam for dipping.

I once ordered a Monte Cristo in a Chicago diner and got basically two pieces of French Toast with ham, turkey, and cheese in the middle. It was NOT the same!


These are the Best!!!
