Red Cabbage and Apples

- 3 tbsp butter or margarine shopping list
- 1 large onion, finely chopped shopping list
- 1 medium red cabbage, shredded (about 2 pounds) shopping list
- 3 firm apples, peeled, cored and shredded shopping list
- ¾ cup water shopping list
- ½ cup red wine shopping list
- 3 tbsp cider vinegar shopping list
- 2 tsp sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp salt shopping list
- ½ tsp nutmeg shopping list
- 1/8 tsp pepper shopping list
- 2 tbsp lemon juice shopping list
How to make it
- Melt butter or margarine in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion; cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Add cabbage and apples; cool 10 minutes, stirring 3 times. Add water, wine, vinegar, sugar salt, nutmeg and pepper. Cover and cook over low heat 30 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Before serving, stir lemon juice into cabbage mixture. If the cabbage is too dry, add a small amount of hot water. Serve hot.

This sounds wonderful, and I can just imagine how decadent it would be if bacon drippings were substituted for the butter! Yummo!
