Austins Irish Bread Recipe
A great bread for breakfast or with your meal, this recipe is from a neighbor, Austin MacManus.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbls brown sugar
  • 2 teasp baking powder
  • 1 teasp baking soda
  • 1 teasp salt
  • 1/2 cup currants
  • 1 teasp caraway seeds
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • In a large bowl stir together first 5 ingredients
  • Add currants and caraway seeds.
  • Add buttermilk, stir till well moistened
  • Turn into a greased 8" pan
  • Austin always used a black iron frying pan
  • Sprinkle a tiny bit of sugar on top
  • Make a small cross in the center
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 min

Love this! I have lots of soda bread recipes, but this one sounds unique! I was once told that "real" soda bread wouldn't have eggs or butter in it. Don't know if that is true, but it did come from a "real" Irish man! LOL!
