I didn't want to forget the filling I used to make "Potica Or Mrs Meros Christmas Bread Recipe" nut free. We have a severe (deadly) nut allergy in the house.

Ingredients
  • Look Up:
  • Potica Or Mrs Meros Christmas Bread Recipe (thanks so much for the recipe!)
  • Filling:
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 4 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions
  1. Alterations to original recipe:
  2. Combine sugar and spices
  3. Follow the directions up to rolling out. (Divide dough into 3 sections for easier rolling.)
  4. Sprinkle a small amount of water on the dough and rub across (don't use too much or the filling will come right out during baking.)
  5. Sprinkle on 1 1/3 cup sugar mixture per loaf.
  6. Roll tightly and put in greased pans. Allow to rise until double (about 1 hour depending on the temperature in the house.)
  7. Bake at 350* for 30- 35 minutes,
  8. For rolls, cut the larger roll into 1 inch pieces. Put into greased pan and allow to rise until doubled. Bake 20-25 minutes.
  9. Frost with a simple powdered sugar, vanilla and milk (or cream) frosting. I don't know the exact measurements. I put in a bowl about 2 cups of powdered sugar and add cream until it is the consistancy I desire, then add about 1 teaspoon of vanilla (or other flavoring).
  10. I was able to make:
  11. 1 regular loaf (diving the dough into three lengths place side by side into the loaf pan)
  12. 24 rolls
  13. 2 mini loaves
  14. I think it would make about 60 rolls?

I remember something like this my grandmother used to make called povotica....it was a sweet nut bread that we splurge on sometimes around the holidays. There is a bakery in Kansas City, KS called Strawberry Hill Bakery that sells povotica online. Very good stuff!
