Broccoli is a favorite veggie in our house so this strata has become a go-to dish when we have overnight guests.

Ingredients
  • 12 1/4" thick slices day old Italian bread
  • 20 ounces frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and drained OR 1 pound fresh broccoli, blanched and cut in small pieces
  • 2 cups Monterey jack cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup onion, minced
  • 4 egg whites
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 cups milk

Directions
  1. Butter a 9" square pan.
  2. Arrange four slices of bread on bottom of dish.
  3. Sprinkle with 1/3 EACH broccoli, jack cheese and onion.
  4. Repeat layering until ingredients are gone.
  5. Whisk together the egg whites, eggs, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper.
  6. Gradually whisk in the milk.
  7. Pour mixture over the broccoli mixture in the pan.
  8. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover and refrigerate 3 to 24 hours.
  10. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  11. Remove casserole from refrigerator.
  12. Bake, covered, for 45 minutes.
  13. Remove foil and continue baking for 15 minutes more.
