My mother-in-law used to "pie" slice her apples for this dessert. This "whole apple" recipe makes for a more dramatic presentation.

Ingredients
  • Pastry for six single-crust pies OR store-bought puff pastry sheets
  • 6 lagre Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cardamom

Directions
  1. Make pastry (if using).
  2. Divide into 6 balls.
  3. Flatten and wrap in plastic, separately.
  4. Chill 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  6. Peel and core apples.
  7. Mix together the butter, brown sugar and cardamom.
  8. Fill apples.
  9. Roll pastry to 8" rounds.
  10. Place apple on top.
  11. Gently press dough around sides of apples.
  12. Leave opening at top.
  13. Place apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  14. Chill for 30 minutes.
  15. Bake in the middle of the oven for 45 minutes.
  16. Cool for 10 minutes.
  17. Serve with French vanilla ice cream.
