This is a crisp cookie that my mother-in-law made every Christmas.. The last time I made these I used chopped dried cranberries in place of the nuts. make sure you store these separate from soft cookies so they stay crisp. Can be frozen

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions
  1. Cream shortening, butter, brown and white sugar together. Add egg and vanilla beat to combine.
  2. Mix flour, soda and salt together and add to butter, sugar , egg mix.
  3. Mix only until combined. do not over mix
  4. Mix in the nuts.
  5. Dough can be chilled for easier handling
  6. Shape into 1 inch balls.
  7. Dip in red or green sugar and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. and flatten with the bottom of a glass.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minuites
