SLOPPY JOE MEATBALLS DATED 1958 This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Rancer Estate in Fort Worth, Texas in 1988.

Ingredients
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano crushed
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped green sweet pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 2-3 dashes bottled hot pepper sauce

Directions
  1. Heat oven to 350.
  2. Combine egg, bread crumbs, 1/4 cup of the onion and oregano in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add ground beef and mix well then shape into 42 meatballs.
  4. Arrange in a single layer in a rectangular baking pan then bake 15 minutes then drain.
  5. Cook remaining onion and sweet pepper in hot oil in large saucepan until tender.
  6. Stir in tomato sauce, sugar, mustard, chili powder, pepper, garlic and hot pepper sauce.
  7. Bring to boiling then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 5 minutes.
  8. Serve immediately.
