Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cover beans generously with water and soak overnight.
  • Drain beans, put in kettle and boil for 30 minutes or until the beans are tender.
  • Add the sugar, molasses, tomato paste, and salt.
  • Mix.
  • Cut the onions into quarters; place in an oiled pan or casserole dish.
  • Add the beans and bake in a slow oven (300 degrees F or 150 degree C) for three of four hours.
  • The time of baking can be decreased by cooking at a higher temperature.
  • Slower cooking brings out more flavor.
  • Check beans occasionally, adding more water if they become too dry.

A fairly good baked bean recipe. Tends to want to be on the tomatoey side. It takes a whole lot more time than 30 minutes to boil the beans to tender.
