French Beef Au Gratin Recipe

French Beef Au Gratin Recipe
I got this out of Reader's Digest years ago and saved it for a decade before I actually got to cook it. Wow! was I impressed. It doesn't look pretty, but it tastes absolutely wonderful. It's even good cold.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 lb. steak
  • 4 cups sweet onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 Tablespoons plain flour
  • 1 Tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 24 oz. beef broth
  • 2 cups cooked curly noodles
  • 4 oz. shredded mozzarella and Parmesan

Directions
  1. Freeze steak a while until it's easily cut, and then slice it as thin as possible.
  2. Chop onions.
  3. Melt butter over medium heat. Saute onions until caramelized, 15-20 minutes. With slotted spoon, remove onions to bowl.
  4. Brown beef.
  5. In small bowl, mix flour, sugar, and spices.
  6. Return onions and any juices to pan.
  7. Add 1 cup broth then flour mixture to pan; stir 1 minute till bubbly.
  8. Gradually add rest of broth (I don't usually add the whole 24 oz.), stirring to scrape drippings; simmer 10 minutes.
  9. Serve over noodles; top with shredded cheese.

That sounds yummy - the flavors of brown sugar and cumin would give it an interesting flavor twist...and caramelized onions make everything delish - I'll be trying this one. Thanks!

Yummy, I'm with Krum, this sounds delicious.

It's wonderful!! Beyond yummy...So glad I tried it..Fixed this up on a cold night when our daughter and her family were over. Son-in-law told our daughter 'don't leave this house without that recipe'! Grandson (3) took home the leftovers and ate for lunch and dinner the next day too. :)
