Cornish Pasties Recipe
This recipe is very similar to one that my grandmother made. My mother gave me this version. I remember having it at my grandmother's home when I was young. Coal miners in Wales, and later in the upper midwest, took these in their lunch boxes.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. round steak
  • 2 potatoes--peeled
  • 1 medium turnip--peeled
  • 1 onion
  • 3 pkgs pie crust mix (Pillsbury or Betty Crocker)
  • salt and pepper

Directions
  1. Cut meat , potatoes and turnip into cubes.
  2. Chop onions.
  3. Place these into separate small bowls.
  4. Mix each package of pastry dough separately, according to package directions.
  5. Roll dough out on a floured board and cut circles the size of a luncheon plate ( you will make 10 8-inch circles). (each package makes 3 1/3 circles) Make circles about 1/8 inch thick.
  6. Place dough circles on 3 foiled covered baking sheets.
  7. Divide fillings equally onto one half of each pastie circle
  8. Sprinkle each with some salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Fold circles over in half over filling and seal edges well with a little bit of water on your finger.
  10. Seal completely by scoring the sealed edge with the tines of a fork.
  11. Poke a few holes in the top of each one with a fork to let out steam while baking.
  12. Bake two pans at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Rotate pans from top and bottom shelves of oven.
  13. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 1 hour more.
  14. Watch carefully during last 10 minutes for scorching around edges.
  15. Bake 3rd pan,after reheating the oven to 450 degrees and follow baking directions above.
  16. Serve with butter or sour cream on top.
  17. Extras may be frozen.
  18. Yummy!
