Southern Fried Beef Steak With Gravy Recipe
SOUTHERN FRIED BEEF STEAK WITH GRAVY This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the McLean Estate in Irving, Texas in 1982.

Ingredients
  • 1-1/2 pounds round steak cut into square servings
  • 2 medium white onions sliced
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions
  1. Beat steaks with meat mallet then sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  2. Brown steaks in hot shortening and set aside.
  3. In the same hot fat brown onions adding more shortening if necessary.
  4. Blend in flour and add 2 cups hot water then season with salt, pepper and cayenne.
  5. Add steaks to gravy then add Kitchen Bouquet and ketchup.
  6. Cover pan and let simmer until tender.
