How to make it

  • In a Dutch oven or roaster, melt butter and sauté 1 onion and garlic until soft. Season while sautéeing.
  • while they are cooking, shape beef into 1/4-pound hamburger patties. Season patties, brown in a skillet or frying pan, stack on top of sautéed onions. Top patties with the other onion, and add 1 cup of water and some hot sauce.
  • Cover and let simmer on very low heat for a couple of hours minimum, to absorb the flavor of the onions, garlic and hot sauce.

I make these by adding breadcrumbs, salt and pepper and an egg to the burgers. Shape into small patties, grill quickly on each side to brown and then add side by side in a large baking dish. Cut large slices of white onion and lay one slice on top of each burger. A little salt and pepper on top and add 1/2 inch of water, beer or beef broth to pan.Cover with aluminum foil. Watch to see broth does not evaporate. Steam on top of stove on low heat for an hour or so until the onion is translucent. Serve on slider rolls with whatever you like on your burgers. These turn out very tender, They are great to make for a football day as everyone can help themselves. Keep on low to keep warm.
