I know, it's another group, but sometimes you just gotta. I couldn't find the right group to bring this up in so I thought I would bring it up this way.

I had never picked one up until the other day and now I'm hooked.
I have scoured the latest issue, April/May 2008, from cover to cover and it's fantastic. There is just no way I can possibly make all of the dishes that I find of interest and if I did, I would have to buy new clothes, as the old ones barely fit now.

My Mother sends recipes to me from...I believe...Taste of Home. I like that mag because the recipes are tested. I'll check out Taste of the South. Could they be related?
    Thanks!

BTW...RML, Linda, thanks for joing! I noticed the price of flour has gone up. I'm doing so much bread baking that I'm going through it fast.
They are saying that just about everything is going to go up. If grain is used, whether it be used as feed or high fructose corn syrup, it's going up. If it has to be transported, it's going up. There won't be much that isn't going to go up until the price of crude oil goes down. They have it, you want it. You will pay dearly...

Everything is going up! Here, the "good" milk is almost $6 a gallon, and we are 20 minutes from the dairy!!! Eggs are nearly $2 a dozen...everything is outrageous! I live in a tiny tiny town, 2 grocery stores...one of which has no selection, at all. No WalMart or anything, we are at their mercy! LOL

I'm pretty lucky, Right now. We've lived in tiny towns as well as huge cities. Medium size is just right for me. VB has all kinds of grocery stores and specialty food stores. I used to shop at the commissary exclusively - great prices, but I kept running into people I know...Remind me to tell you about the "cabbage patch" doll. Too Funny.

Anyway...I went into an Oriental market, just to be nosy. I picked up a weird looking jar, had no clue what the heck was floating around in it. Whatever it was looked like it was still alive. An Asian lady came up to me and said....No, you won't like that. You try this. By the time I left her store, I had two bags of ingredients, chop sticks, a bamboo steamer and a recipe. I made her recipe...it didn't turn out very well and I still don't know what some of those ingredients were.

RML, you are a very brave lady. That sounds scary.

TP, with as much bread as my hubby can eat (slices and slices at a time) I'm appalled at the prices. It is a wonder we will be able to cook at all.

I love Southern Living magazine. My mom used to buy me a subscription for Christmas every year. And for years and years, she would give me "Gourmet" but with kids and no money, I gave up that habit long ago. Some dear woman bought every one I had saved in our yard sale at a quarter a piece, I made 20 bucks.
Gave "Taste of Home" to my gf for her Christmas present and she sends them to me when she is done with them. Recycling at it's finest.

    Nice thread, dear.

    Hey, Notcho...
Great subject! There might be some very interesting Favorites.
Mine is the second Annual Enchilada/Taco party and our house August 2. Last year was fun and the next one should be too.
OK, OK, not a festival but you should have seen what went on! Beer was involved.

Yes, I want that magazine also, along with Cooks Illustrated, Light Cooking, Mother Earth News and Grit.
I would also love Taste of Home, Birds and Bloom and a few more from that publisher. Can't have them all so will just have to rotate what I buy.

Wow! I thought $4 was bad! A couple of the stores here have milk in their ads, one for $2.99 Gal. and the other (Kroger) 3 half-gallons for $4.
I've also found I can but my OJ for less $$$ than if I buy the concentrate and make it myself.
    Flour prices have also risen.
Eggs are around $2 a dozen, sometimes more (which I won't pay) and sometimes a little less.
Along with the milk, the cottage cheese prices are up.
Those are the things that I've noticed.
OH, had lunch at KFC today. It's been a long time since I've been in one and was quite shocked to see the meals at over $6 each. We had the buffet which was quite a bit more. It's pitiful.

KFC with a buffet? What a Great idea! I'm a grazer. I want to "try" everything. I always overorder and then feed all of the leftovers to family and critters, the next day. My Parrot eats everything that we do, although it bothers me to feed her chicken....but she loves it.
I found the mag....Taste of the South. Nice! I may have to subscribe.

Yes, I have been in three different KFC buffets but not all have them. I LOVE their cole slaw and had a huge helping. It's like dessert for me. I like having lots of veggies, so the corn and green beans were a hit with me.
AND...believe it or not, a few of them also offer livers and gizzards, which we love. They are CHEAP so I can get a little box for next to nothing. I only know of one that has them, though and that is in Kansas City. I wish they had them here.
    Glad you found the magazine!
