My first job was at Woolworth's in Marysville, CA in 1967 - woohoo - long time ago! My favorite was their grilled cheese sandwich and fountain Cokes. My job was making signs for inside the store. Messy, inky job - but at the time - I loved it!

I'll bet if those signs were to turn up now, they'd be worth a pretty penny?!?! I really do miss that store with those creaky, wooden floors!

My Mom's first job was at Woolworth's too, in the 50's, when she was 14! She made bows for gift wrapping. She worked in various depts, and met my Dad at the lunch counter. She also worked in the records (music), and had hundreds of 45's where the sales rep would always give them to her. I loved those records when I was a kid.
We were travelling in Asheville, NC, a couple of years ago, and they have turned their Woolworth's into an art gallery / store for local artisits. We bought a cheese tray that was made from a Grey Goose Vodka bottle (like the air had been sucked out and it was mashed flat). Really cool.
Also, at one time I worked for Susie's Casuals, which was a nationwide chain, back in the early 90's. They were owned by Woolworths. Some of our sister stores that were also owned by Woolworths: Kinney Shoes, Footlocker, Champs, Northern Reflections...just a few that I can remember. Footlocker and Champs are the only ones we have around here, now.

This is SO weird - was just talking about Woolworths yesterday with Brad. How I used to ride the bus to town and go there for lunch at the counter. I had a guy draw my picture on a napkin when I was 16 and he just came over and gave it to me signed. He might be a famous artist, who knows, my stupid ex husband was so jealous, when he came across it after we were married, he threw it out! The guy had written on it "your smile is worthwhile" - just another reason to really despise my ex! LOL

Our original Woolworth's has been sub-divided into many narrow shops with loft space above. The Preservation Society lobbied long and hard to maintain the facade. I surely miss those stubby glasses of milk, grilled cheese and the thick white bowls that held chili or soup. Mom would park us at the counter and she would shop.

Back in the early 60s, I remember when at McDonald's, you could get change back from your dollar for burger, fries and shake... 15 cents each for the burger and shake, and 12 cents for the fries.
