Favorite grilling experiences

First, Dave, thank you for setting up this group. I LOVE to grill and winters here are hard...not because I think it's too cold too grill, but because the way the house is set up, it's hard to get to the grill when there's snow on the ground (this year there was quite a bit).

Second, you should know that I'm a charcoal Weber die-hard. When I moved up here, I left my grill, which had long lost the wooden handles on the lid, behind and it was hard to say goodbye. Then my current landlord found a used one, gave it to me to use, and life was good again.

So the best meal ever made by me on my Weber was chicken pieces smoked over mesquite chips and charcoal, and covered with fresh pineapple slices. The pineapple juice coated the chicken and carmelized, the smoke permeated the meat, and at the very end I threw on some skewered shrimp. I should do that again this year...

That sounds great dancegypsy! I also have a Weber, but I use propane, not charcoal, like I said I am kind of new.

I think the weather has finally turned here in Ohio so we pulled the grill out of the garage last night and put it in its place on the patio. Now I need to head to the store to figure out what I should make tonight.

i'm finally all set up and good to go....
got my propane and cleaned the grill...

i am a charcoal diehard as well gypsy...
but living in the city we have to make due...

my favourite grilling experiences are from my childhood..
grilling with my grandfather, dad and brother...
these are actually some of my fondest memories EVER...
so grilling is a BIG deal for me...
brings back all kinds of happy memories...
just starting the fire and getting the coals going was always a project, because my family seemed to be anti chemical fire starters...( it DOES add a sort of chemical taste to the meat...)...
so my brother and i would gather dry twigs and newspapers .... fanning the flames and blowing on the coals incessantly trying to get the them to finally catch...
haha!!!...ridiculous!!...but super fun when you are a kid...
    ;-)

but i think the VERY best ...
was grilling at sundown on the beach in long island...

still in our damp salty swimsuits...
wiped out and prune-y from a full day of body surfing...
hot meat off the grill in our hands, faces all greasy from the spare ribs and feet buried in the still warm sand...digging down with our toes to the cool part...
mom always ready with napkins and fresh ripe nectarines and juicy plums for dessert...

yeah...doesn't get much better than that...

so- yep...any excuse for a bbq...!!!
    woohoo!...

I got such a wonderful picture of your memory, softgrey! Thank you for that.

I remember having moved from Wisconsin to Illinois - at that time, it was hard to get regional favorites outside of the region, so my dad would go thru brat withdrawal. Families still lived in WI so there was reason to come back, and we'd often arrive home with packages of brats. My dad would saute some onions, add them to a large pot filled with beer, along with the brats, and simmer it until the brats were done. The brats would then be placed on a hot grill, additional onions would be added to the cooking liquid, and when the brats had browned (sometimes getting a little darker if he got involved in conversation - hmmm maybe that's where I get it), they'd be added back to the pot to keep warm.

My dad told me before he died that favorite memory of me was him asking me what I though he did for a living. I apparently said I didn't know but he gave a lot of parties. I know a lot more about what he did now, but my memories include staff parties at our house and my dad's brats.
