Storing onions

Found this little tidbit while perusing a herbs and spices website.

Sweet onions are high in water and sugar content so they require more care when storing; treat them gently to avoid bruising. Store away from potatoes because they'll absorb water.

Who knew? I always store my potatoes and onions together. Not in the same bag but side by side. Have even seen onions displayed next to potatoes in the produce department.

I always keep my onions in the veggie bin of the fridge...that cuts down on the tears when slicing. (I don't like potatoes that have been stored in the firdge, or in the cooler at the store...makes them taste sugary.)

Another trick with onions is to run them under hot water before chopping or slicing (after peeling), this makes for no tears at all, unless it's just a super strong onion!
