OK - I know there are some fans here. How about a show of hands? We don't have to discuss unless someone wants to. I'm just curious how many of us there are. I waited for the season 3 DVD's to come out and just got them Monday. I only saw the first episode of season 3 so far because I have a "no Downton unless you are on the exercise bike" rule. :) I have the first two seasons on DVD as well. Anyone? I know NPMarie is one! :) I saw a T-shirt the other day that said "Free Bates" :)
Yes, I do that with a few things I watch so that I keep up with my exercises. So I can make recipes from here. :) Well, maybe its just you and me and Marie. I kinda think that Mrs. Hughes has a bit of a crush of Carson. :)
I'm a late starter and am still on season 2. I don't want to spoil this thread for the rest of you by making you hold back on spoilers. Therefore, I won't be checking back here. Have fun with this thread though.
It is on Sunday night here as well. I waited for the DVD's to come out though so I could watch on my exercise bike. I think I'll be three episodes behind after tonight's airs. I'll be back on the bike tomorrow. :)
OMG..I just saw this! I am a HUGE fan! Frankieanne if you still have 3 episodes to watch, then WE should watch what we say so we aren't "spoilers" ALL I can say about the Jan 27th episode is "WOW" Peddle faster and catch up girlfriend:D LOL
The night this season of Downton aired here, they first put on a TV special about the Castle that Downton is actually filmed at in England. Did you see it? Highclere Castle. And it showed the real Earl and Countess that lives there. It is just a spectacular building. And they do offer tours (the butler takes the tour tickets when he's not busy butlering) :) http://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/ The actual Earl said that it costs so much money to maintain such a place that they decided to allow both the filming of Downton and the public tours and put that money towards repairs and renos that needed to be done.
I did see that Janet..I still have it saved in my recordings:) There's a contest where you can win a trip to England to visit Highclere Castle!! Also, did you notice they don't have the prices of the tickets on the website...bet it's spendy..
I really enjoyed seeing Shirley Maclaine on the show. Although Maggie Smith is even better as the Dowager Countess. Isn't that a fun title. "Hi", "I'm Janet, the Dowager Countess". :) Although I find her a bit weak kneed, I think Elizabeth McGovern is gorgeous playing Lady Cora. Who's your favourite Male and Female Character? I guess Matthew Crawley is my favourite male character (with Mr. Carson my 2nd) And I'll go with Anna Bates as my favourite female character. Tough choices though as of course each character brings such a unique aspect to the show.
Ha, that's funny because just last week was the first time I looked at that place and thought, "Geez, the upkeep must be expensive." :) My favorites are Thomas and O'Brien. Ha! Not! Keep waiting for O'Brien to get what's coming to her. Hopefully. It always irks me that Cora seems to listen to whatever she has to say. I guess she can only see good in people. Especially since O'Brien was the cause of her miscarriage. I actually found her doing that rather hard to believe but I guess its a "soap." In a way. I really love Anna. She's so calm and determined. Mary, too, is rather the same, I think. I rather like Bates and I thought the romance between he and Anna was, ummm, so romantic. :) Looks like I'll be losing some weight this week with all the catch up peddling I have to do. :) I just remembered I can't watch tonight though. I will bike to RuPaul's Drag Race tonight. Tomorrow and Wednesday for certain.
Mt favorite female is Maggie Smith & the actor who plays Matthew Crawley..I do like Carson as well...I like all of them!!! Good or bad, they are all wonderful:) Hey Frankieanne, a drag race? Sounds fun!
I don't actually care for Lady Mary. I don't think she's nice all the way through. And although I know they bring a lot to the show, Thomas and O'Brien are just horrid. :) RuPaul's Drag Race hey Frankieanne? I'm not familiar with that one. :)
Its a "race" to determine America's next Drag Queen superstar. Its now season 5. I love the show, although I'm certain it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. One drag queen gets eliminated each week. Its entertaining and kinda inspirational, to me. Everyone has a story, ya know. I think RuPaul is a phenomenal person. I love Maggie Smith in her role. She's A #1 tops.
Its amazing, too, how different these actors and actresses look in "real" life. Especially O'Brien and Mrs. Patmore and even Anna. I guess they must use minimal make-up on them or something. That's interesting, Chuckie, that you don't think Mary is nice all the way through. I'll have to take a closer look at her next time. There are so many people to pay attention to. :)
That's so interesting. I see Mary as fiercely loyal and, as I said, determined. She definitely has stood by Anna and Bates and Sybil, as well. She did kinda throw a tantrum when Matthew said he wouldn't give his money to Downton (I'm watching part two of season three tonight so this may all be different later on) but I think she just wants to save her family from ruin. Maybe that's selfish but not, too. Kind of like Scarlett O'Hara. She was a bit ruthless but her family would have starved without her. That's just my take. :)
My favourite female is Anna and next would be Maggie Smith and Daisy. It is hard to put them is order like that b/c they all play such good parts. Yes isn't it amazing what good make up and costumes can do! I was flabbergasted with what Anna really looked like as well as Mrs. Pattmore! As far as the men I like Mathew and Mr. Crawley best and Thomas and O'Brien the kitchen maid the least! I don't mind Lady Mary at all! She does seems a bit ruthless at times but that is what she has been brought up to do and I think she and Mathew will save the family, staff and Downton from ruin as well. We shall see what happens no doubt.
LOL @ the Drag Race Frankieanne. I'd never heard of that kind. :) I'm sure it'd be fun to watch. I googled RuPaul. He's very beautiful. And ya....I've always had my suspicions about her character integrity but I think it was during the time when she was trying to persuade Matthew to give the money to Downton that she dropped a bit in my estimation. I respected Matthew for not wanting to take the money because he felt he didn't deserve it and I also respected the fact that he was thinking of even giving it away. Mary was very disdainful of that idea and it's her father that basically hasn't handled the family money well already that landed them in that situation. I like the Earl of Grantham, but he doesn't have a good head on his shoulders. :)
Yes, I guess there is going to be a season 4. I've googled it but I don't want to click on the links in case there are any spoilers. I'm done with episode 4 for season 3 now. Back at the bike next week. I take the weekends off. :)
I will be on episode 5 on Tuesday. My last DVD has episode 9: A Journey to the Highlands as the last one. They probably have split up the two hour ones though. I may get caught up this week - if I am a good girl. :)
We're just going to PVR it. To sleepy to stay up 'til 11. :) Very excited though. Last week's episode was awesome. Mind you they all are. Holy on the Earl losing it in the last episode hey. LOL! That won't give away too much Frankieanne! :) Wouldn't it be fun to host a Downton Abbey Dinner Party? :)
All I can say is WOW! That 2 hours flew by..what a great episode..I still can't believe next week is the finale...I'm all zipped up just like Joce:D BTW, did you hear the guy playing Matthew will not be in next seasons episodes..I heard maybe 1 or 2, but he's leaving as well...where did I hear that??????????????
hehe That's funny, Marie. Me thinks you are soaking up the English a bit. :) I might be wrong. I just checked the names of the cast members. I think maybe it was the Matthew Crawley guy after all. I'm afraid to click any news links I see on the show due to possible spoilers.
Yeah, you don't want to look up ANYTHING Downton on the internet..they have spoilers for the next season!!!! Blimey! (LOL Frankieanne) I couldn't find anything on Bates leaving..so must be Matthew only....Wasn't episode 5 sad! I cried as well:( Like a baby... So you are on #6, the 2 hour episode from last Sunday..that's a good one:) When will you watch that?? This weekend?
I think they have split up last night's into two on my DVD. I will watch 6 tomorrow and 7 the next day. My DVD says there are nine episodes. I'd love to be able to have some of the clothes to wear to a dinner party, Chuckie. Did you get to watch last night's before you left?
That would be too bad if the Matthew Crawley actor changed, but as Marie says, we'll switch over pretty easily I suspect. LOL Marie @ "Bloody Hell". :) No Frankieanne. Jim and I started to watch it but then were getting sleepy. So we decided just to let it record and we'd watch it when we get back. I saw a Dog this morning getting taken for a walk that looked just like the Dog in the intro of Downton Abbey. :) He was so cute. A golden Lab I think right\?
Frankieanne, I think your right..they do slpit the episodes up on DVD's..
Janet, I thought that was kinda cute..I actually got "Bloody Hell" from watching Harry Potter:) Googled the dog in DA here's some doggie info for the time period I thought was interesting http://www.thebark.com/content/downton-abbey-dog-right-breed-wrong-color
You 2 be sure to let us know when you have watched all the episodes so we can discuss all of it!!! We have about 11 months to discuss Season 3, so no hurry:D
After all of us are done we should make a Downton Abbey Season 3 thread. I "talked" to Lovebreezy and she said she would like to come here and chat but she is only on Season 2 and is afraid of spoilers.
That was an interesting dog article, Marie. Queen Victoria had 88 dogs!!! Yipes! OK, finished episode 6 tonight. It was 47 minutes long so I guess I get the second hour tomorrow. We will be ahead of Chuckie until she gets back home. Lips are sealed. :) It sure is easy doing my biking. 47 minutes is over with before I know it. Hoping Cranford will help me do the same after Downton is done.
I got the season 1 & 2 DVDs for Christmas. I would have been through them all in a week except Mom ( http://www.grouprecipes.com/people/131joyce ) wanted to see them too. So I have to take it down to her to watch with her. She would never be able to figure out the machine herself. Since she has a temporary roommate, we also have to find a time when she is off work and can watch with us. I REALLY don't want to spoil all your fun so may I suggest: . 1 You go on without me and I'll just pass OR 2 If you really want to talk about something just put a bit SA (Spoiler Alert) at the first of your comment and I'll know not to read that one or ones that have the SA.. Oh and I'm recording season 3 so I guess I'll be watching it while you all go through withdrawals.
Ah, that explains it, LB. That's really sweet of you to take them to your mom's plus wait for her roommate to watch. You really have willpower! I really doubt we will be discussing season 3 here as Chuckie isn't home now and won't be for quite a few days and isn't watching. And this thread is getting quite long so if we do, I think I'd be all for starting a new thread dedicated to season 3. So, you would definitely know there would be spoilers there.
I tried to google how much the budget is for what Downton spends on clothes but wasn't successful. Indeed 'exquisite' is a good descriptor Frankieanne. SA for LB - maybe a little. Show of hands who agreed with Sir Anthony's decision at the altar? Also you guys....I totally don't mind if you want to start another thread and discuss the latest episodes or this past season. I love the program so much that it probably wouldn't bother me to find out news anyway. It certainly wouldn't stop me from watching that's for sure. :)
I was amazed to see the number of costumes. I had forgotten and really don't usually realize how many times they change just during one episode. Thanks Chuckieb for the SA alert--I didn't read it and am glad you all have a second thread now where you can talk/write freely. TY
LOL Frankieanne @ the Downton phrases link. That's funny. I was watching a TV show last night I've never seen before called "The New Normal" and there was a little girl on there who was dressing up and speaking "Downton". Hilarious. And what a great link that was again Frankieanne on what the cast looks like in real life. Lady Sybil is simply drop dead gorgeous and LOL @ Mr. Bates and his funky glasses. Anna too is stunning. And Jim Carter/Mr. Carson looks like he'd be a lot of fun as opposed to his prim and proper personality on the show. Holy Smokes at Mrs. Hughes. That's probably the biggest shocker. She's so pretty!!!!!!! And Thomas looks just as much a 'trouble maker' in real life! :) That was fun! :)
FrankieAnne I loved the Phrases--thanks for the link. Yes, I looked even though it said season 3 but you just can't help hearing a bit here and there anyway. Don't think I learned anything that would spoil it for me.
Yes, the Monday after the finale it was pretty much all over the internet. It was hard to avoid. I'm still not done with Season 3 but having it "spoiled" won't take away from my enjoyment of it! I'm glad you enjoyed the links. I just love looking at those clothes. I've been sewing since I was 10 and used to make most of my own clothes. To create those beautiful costumes must be so rewarding.
