    Recipe: Chocolate Tuxedo Strawberries

    ***February 2017 Valentine's Food Challenge***

Very elegant, but way too tedious for me and far more work than you think. When I read through the instructions I thought to myself, “Wow! Much easier than they look.” I used real chocolate and not candy coating so that adds to the difficulty level. By the time I got down to the last 5 strawberries, I was finally getting the hang of it dipping at an angle to make the jacket. I found the jacket was easier to dip half of the strawberry, let it dry and then dip the other half. Dipping in and out of the chocolate, especially at an angle really took a toll on the stems. Many of them wanted to fall off. I will admit, I didn’t have the best quality strawberries and my patience level wasn’t at its best. Too many interruptions! I tried to hold the strawberries without using the stem and ended up with chocolate everywhere! I think I now own a set of chocolate gloves. lol! The buttons looked better if I just painted a small brown dot with the chocolate rather than use a blob to make it looked like a raised button.

Note: I used milk chocolate because I don’t care for darker chocolates, but I think a darker chocolate would look better. The white chocolate I prefer is actually ivory in color. I’ve used an additive in the past to whiten it, but didn't care for the end result. Not sure how the candy shops get theirs so white.

DIZ, I just looked at your photo again and the plate looks exactly like that of my cake saver. Does yours have a glass dome with a glass knob on the top?? If so, it may the same as mine! :)

Thank you, ladies! Bakerme, I don't know if it had a lid at one time or not. Seems like I remember a stainless domed lid, but there isn't a lip or anything around the edge of the plate to hold one in place. The plate belonged to my grandmother and is 60 - 70 yrs old, maybe older. I hate using it because I don't want anything to happen to it, but it's the only nice cake plate I have.

I got mine at an antiques store and, like you, it's the only nice cake plate/saver I have. Boy, a layer cake or Bundt cake looks so pretty through the glass top!

DIZ3....I am MOST impressed. I dont care that you are never going to make them again...You made them this time and you did an excellent job!!!!! I did cream filled strawberries years ago....a Martha Stewart recipe. They too were fiddly and Ive never made the since, but boy that day I looked good. :) For THE first time ever, I saw in my local Sobeys grocery store flyer, strawberries with the stem still attached, specifically made for dipping. Like, not just the green stem leaves, but the actual stem that connects it to the plant. I too prefer milk chocolate and Id choose it over dark chocolate too. Plus...I think theyre gorgeous with the milk chocolate. Again they are just too cute. Who were the lucky people who got to eat them.

Thank you so much, Chuckieb! I've seen pictures with the long stems still attached. Maybe the stores will start getting better strawberries closer to Valentine's Day. No lucky recipient. Just made them for the recipe challenge. The strawberries really weren't that great so I didn't even bother trying to send them to work with hubby.

Wow, just beautiful DIZ!! They turned out so well, I honestly don't know if I could pull those off lol. I have never seen the long stemmed strawberries at the store Janet, how smart of the store to carry them though, I bet it makes dipping a hundred times easier!
