    Homemade Grapenuts Cereal
Recipe made for IMI2's September 2019 'Breakfast' recipe challenge.

My review: What a fun recipe! and so much better than the Grapenuts cereal you buy in the store. I used 1/2 c. brown sugar and it was plenty tasty enough for me. I used buttermilk and also blended the oats down to a course flour which I thought was ideal. My second bake took a little longer to dry my nuts out enough but only about 10 more minutes.

Awesome photo, LindaLMT! It belongs on the front of a box of cereal. Isn't it great when you can make your own cereal and not have to rely on packaged processed foods?

I don't eat cereal anymore DIZ because it's so bad. I'll occasionally buy something organic but have gotten so use to not eating cereal I just don't bother so this was fun and a nice treat.

What a neat recipe Linda and awesome picture! I haven't had Grapenuts in YEARS, since I was young! I remember that I would add sugar to them and they were so crunchy you'd feel like your teeth were breaking lol :P Do these taste similar to the store bought? I don't eat cereal either and when I do find a "healthier" one it's so expensive that I put it back.

They taste similar Michelle, but better. The store bought grapenuts to me taste like cardboard, these, you taste the fresh ingredients and I love that even with less sugar they were still good. Sorta like not-so-sweet crunchy graham cracker bits.

The cereal does look tasty Linda. I've never actually tried Grapenuts before and after looking at the recipe, I realized there was neither grapes nor nuts in it. I'd just assumed there was. LOL. I googled Grapenuts just to learn more. Interesting story. There's even a Grapenuts Ice cream that is a regional dish served in the Maritimes. Created in 1919 in Nova Scotia, a Chef had run out of fresh fruit to put in the ice cream mixture so she threw in some cereal, and it proved to be so popular that a Dairy company started mass producing it. Breakfast of champions. LOL.
