Molasses Spice Cookies with Orange Essence

    Made
Molasses Spice Cookies With Orange Essence
by Conner909 this afternoon as part of my Christmas baking line up and to participate in the IMI11 Cookie swap. :)

This is a nice mild molasses cookies. I got a kick out of grinding pepper into the cookie batter. First time I've ever done that. I ended up with probably half of the orange zest sugar left over which was a shame. I ended up using it in my batch of
White Chocolate Cinnamon And Spice Cookies
which I made right after as I really didn't want it to go to waste.
That orange sugar is delightful. I took a big deep smell of it when I took the food processor lid off and it's heavenly.
I actually got 3 dozen cookies out of this recipe as opposed to two. I personally found the instructions a tad wordy but once I read them over two or three times I just forged ahead and realized it wasn't as complicated as perhaps it first looked.

I didn't bother chilling the dough.

The finished cookie is pretty and the sugar adds a nice sweet crunch to the bite. Having company over this week so they should disappear quickly!

Wow, those are beautiful looking cookies, Chuckie! That recipe is very similar to my tried and true ginger cookie recipe, but with the addition of the orange-sugar. They're so similar that I know yours are delicious!

LOVE your avatar! I guess not all Santa's helpers are elves. Some are squirrels ;c

Fantastic picture. I so need to make these. Seems like they would be great with tea or coffee.

I made these too for the Cookie Swap 2016!!
I used "lemon essence" instead because I have about a hundred lemons from my tree, and need to use them lol. Orange is probably the better match with the spices, but the lemon was still delicious! Squeezed half the juice of a lemon into the batter as well. I agree with Janet, too much sugar zest!! Half would be the perfect amount and I also hated throwing it out, so I put it into the fridge into a container and will save it to stir into some iced tea :) Mine baked up pretty much the shape that I put them onto the pan, a ball, so my next batch I flattened them out with the bottom of a cup some. Easy to make and my little kiddo loved helping me! Added my picture on the recipe :)

Those look so good, chuckieb! Great photo! I would love to have one with my coffee this morning. I'm finding that I really like the flavor of orange in things. My cookie trays are all done this year, but I saved it to make next year. Great find!

Thanks Bakerme! Next time I do this cookie I'm going to use my tried and true molasses cookie as well, which to me has more depth of flavour and then roll them in the orange sugar. The orange sugar rocks. :)

Thanks Linda. Jim actually ate two yesterday and he doesn't eat cookies! :)

I bet the lemon sugar would be lovely too Michelle! I'm so envious of all your lemons. And that you had a cute little helper! :)

Thanks DIZ3. The orange is a nice flavour enhancer and to me rather Christmassy as well.

Chuckie, I just checked out your ginger cookie recipe and it's almost identical to mine. There are a few very slight differences, but otherwise they're the same. I got mine out of the Betty Crocker cookbook I got as a wedding gift years ago. Guess just like clothes, the classics never go out of style :)
