Sage Meatballs With Red Wine Reduction And Vegetable Melody Recipe

This is one of Mr. J.'s and my common favorite meals (top five)! It is excellent, and I'm not just saying that because Manella is a friend. She dictated this recipe to me over THEBUZZ on Allrecipes in the days I was both gluten and dairy intolerant and wondering if there were any Italian recipes that would both satisfy my passion for international cuisine and work within my dietary restrictions. I have made this several times, and by chance on the day I go to post a review on Group Recipes, I did not get my usual excellent result. Here is what I did differently this time that I would NOT do again: (i) used frozen meat (I practically always use fresh: this time I ended up with a "blood clot sauce" instead of red-wine reduction); (ii) subbed frozen thyme for powdered rosemary (since I was out - just not as tasty ); (iii) burned the veggies by accident (whoops!).; (iv) subbed green pepper for red pepper (it is what I had but just not as pretty).

I decided to post my less-than-spectacular photo anyway as instructive as to what NOT to do. If I have made this 10 times and failed only failed once, I will just call it an "off day." What happened is Mr. J. and I went shopping separately on the same day and brought home the same things, so I ended up putting ground meat in the freezer before cooking it when I normally would not have done that.

Please think of this recipe when you do the "Herbs Challenge" in the future.

PS: MY LATEST GREATEST SECRET FOR CREAMY DAIRY-FREE MASHED POTATOES IS TO USE HELLMAN'S MAYO. I SERVED THIS TO EVERYONE AT CHRISTMAS. THE MAYO TASTE IS NOT REALLY NOTICEABLE UNLESS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IT.

I absolutely love the sound of this recipe! So cool that you and Manella both have worked to make this a full meal type of recipe :) Go figure when you are wanting to put a review in here for it, it doesn't go as expected, that's how it sometimes works I guess lol! I do like my veggies charred sometimes, I think they look delicious :)

Mrs. J, I'm sorry this didn't turn out. Things like that always happen to me. Usually, when I'm cooking for others. lol! This recipe has been on my "want to try" list for a very long time. I need to bump it up to the top.

Bummer you didn't get your usual fabulous results with the recipe MrsJ. I so hate when that happens. I made something 2 days ago that I've made before but used a different brand and type of noodle and it wasn't great either, I tossed it. If I'm going to consume calories they best taste good and be worth it is my motto. The recipe looks fantastic though, very fancy. Photo looks good!

Your photo is great Mrs.J, I love the little scoops of mashed potatoes! :D
We all have our "off" days! At least it wasn't totally wasted and you know it's a great recipe. Great tip about the mayo! :)

BIG SMILE! I guess I exaggerated: It wasn't awful - just not spectacular! I guess it is the powdered rosemary in the meat and veggies, the bright splash of red peppers and the red-wine reduction sauce that make the recipe! Thanks for stopping by.
