    ~Made or Oktoberfest 2018 recipe Challenge~

    Zwiebelkuchen Onion Pie by Smurfetta

Zweibelkuchen is a popular Onion pie that's usually made during Oktoberfest. My MIL always made it in a pie crust, and it seems traditional to be made either way. I thought I'd try the yeast dough version, and I liked it a lot!
It's like a pizza meets quiche in a way. Except the creamy filling is more custard like and extremely delicious.
I thought Smurfetta forgot to add the extra eggs to the filling, as I've seen similar recipes using 2 whole eggs plus one egg yolk. She only had the egg yolk listed. Perhaps it was meant to be that way? But I wanted it more eggy and added the 2 whole eggs-- it was perfect! I also added a few scallions, and a dash of paprika to the custard. And added salt and pepper to the custard rather than on top of the bread dough.
I also used caraway seeds instead of cumin. I really believe that was a mistake too, because the two names are similar in German and could easily be mistaken. My MIL used caraway seeds and many other recipes I've seen use it too.
Next time, I will mix the onions and bacon with the custard and bake it all together. The separate bake time made the center of the bread rise too much and there wasn't much room for the custard, but I did manage to fit it all without it dripping down the sides! The bacon and onions would kind of fall out of the pie when eating, so thats why I'd add them to the custard next time.
I baked it in a 12" spring form pan, and pressed the dough up the sides a little to form a crust. It baked for a total of 45 minutes, so the bake time was spot on.
I will try it again soon with those changes! We all loved the flavors! :)

OMG Shona! I could eat your photos they look so good. I have my eye on another onion pie recipe ... love the idea of it. I agree to use caraway seeds, cumin is odd for a German recipe. Like too that you had the forethought to use more egg.

Wow, beautiful pie Shona!! I like your changes, and it's good you know enough about German recipes to know to add more egg. I have an onion "cake" lined up for next week (maybe) German Onion Cake
    Loving this months RC!!!

It's just STUNNING Shona! I'd never heard of Onion Pie before. I think I would prefer it in a pie crust myself.

Michelle, that Onion cake looks insane. In the photo it looks more like a pizza.

Lol Janet, I thought the same thing by the photo, a pizza! But then I read the directions and you press the dough into a 10 inch cake pan, so the photo, that was uploaded by someone else, must be from somewhere else :)

Perhaps it`s just the angle the photo was taken at. Looking forward to seeing your review.

I have the same recipe saved as Michelle … the German Onion Cake and now that it's mentioned, yes, same person submitting. Hubs hates onions so I may or may not make it. It looks heavenly but me eating the whole thing … well, I just don't need to do that.

    Thanks everyone! :)
I almost made that recipe Michelle! But I didn't have the poppy seeds.
The pie crusted ones are usually very thin, like a pizza. (though that one in a 10" pan might be a thicker crust) The custard filling is not thick like a quiche filling. You can make it meatless served with sausages, or pork chops on the side. Or add cooked bacon, ham etc..to the filling. It can also be made with leeks instead of onions, or a mixture of different onions. Though it's without potatoes, the filling and flavours remind me of perogies for some reason! ;)
