I finally found it! I would have never thought of doing this had I not come across this. Such a great idea! I actually warmed my cider up a bit with some cinnamon just to melt the ice cream a a little so that we could drink it with a straw quicker. I REALLY wish we had had the cinnamon ice cream because it would have been so good in this. Next time I'll make sure to have it. This was a fun little recipe and we really enjoyed it!

When I first saw the recipe title on the IMI group page, I immediately thought of the floats that are fried like donuts...so was really surprised when I saw your pic!!!

Never would have imagined making an ice cream float with cider. Fun little recipes are my favorite kind. :)

I never would have thought of using cider for a float! I always think of something bubbly in a float - like root beer. I never heard of cinnamon ice cream either! Wonderful picture.

I LOVE ice cream. I put orange juice in french vanilla ice cream for a fake Orange Julius, so I can imagine how good this will taste. Your pick looks great, ML2C. Makes me want one now. Im gonna try this. I'll put cinnamon in the vanilla. Thanks for the heads up :)

ML2C, being from TX, I'm sure you're familiar with sopapillas? A "float" is basically the same thing although I suppose from a different cuisine. My favorite was to eat them with honey inside, or just sprinkle them with powdered sugar and eat like a donut. I haven't deep fried anything for a LONG time, but boy, those sure do sound good! :)

GK, The floats you are referring to, arent they deep fried? If so, Riddle me this..........If deep fried, how or why are they called floats? How is something "deep" floating?

Holy guacamole, Batman! You and your riddles... I'm not going to touch that one...I know enough to stop while I'm ahead! :P My "bit and byte" answer was about the best I can do. You may find my answer to this one, while being deep, a bit shallow for your tastes. ;)

I understand now what you meant GK and yes you can find sopapillas at about every Mexican food restaurant around here. Mr. P maybe they are called floats cause they are these puffed up thin crispy breads that are completely hollow and airy inside. What you do is poke a tiny hole in them and drizzle honey inside then move the sopapilla/float all around to coat all of the inside then you eat them ;) SO delicious!

That does sound delicious, ML2C. Are they like jelly doughnuts, where they taste sooo, sooo good, but are sooo, sooo bad for ya? I have never heard fo these. I kinda hope I dont come across them, too. Just like doughnuts. I hate it when someone brings them into work. They smell and look sooo good that I just cant keep away from them = )

I have a question. I lknow I can google it, but its more enjoyable to ask here. What is the difference between apple cider and juice?

Cider is unfiltered apple juice, Mr. P. The clear apple juice you see in bottles has had all the apple pulp/solids filtered and filtered out of it. I believe its also pasteurized and will keep longer. Apple cider has a lower shelf life and will ferment. Which would make for a <hic> more interesting float, although not too kid friendly. :)

If you are going to try to find cider in the grocery store mr p, look for it in the produce section in a refrigerated area. Not in the aisle with apple juice. :) We have a lot of apple orchards locally, and in the fall you can buy cider direct from the farms... Apple cider makes a nice warm drink, too - with spices added, like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and orange. Then it's called "mulled cider."

It's good you enjoy asking questions here, because I think we all enjoy answering them just as much. :P

Came back to add that fermented cider is called "hard cider."
I'm not sure where to find cider where I live but then I've never looked. A farmers' market may work, too, along with gkw's suggestions.

I have another comment to add, too. Imagine that. :P Around here you can buy apple cider donuts. (yes, I take the spelling shortcut instead of writing out "doughnut" which is probably more correct) So that means you could have an apple cider float with your apple cider float. :D

Okay...I gave in to the apple cider craze that's sweeping the IMI group and bought a half gallon this afternoon :D I also spied with my little eye some cinnamon ice cream - it was one of the seasonal flavors being featured. Didn't buy any though..........will just soften vanilla ice cream and mix some cinnamon into it. And........mr p, ML2C, Frankieanne, and anyone else I told cider couldn't be found in the juice aisle, I was WRONG. The cider I bought was refrigerated and in the produce section, but I also found a commercial brand in the aisle with the apple juice. Whew...I'm glad the record is set straight now...

There is nothing wrong with 2 Mr P :D! I actually found my apple cider in the produce section but not refrigerated. I didn't see all thedifferent flavors though that GK saw. Just regular old apple cider. I was kinda looking forward to seeing what flavors there were, but oh well ;)
