Big Apple Cinnamon Muffins

I was surprised at how good these muffins were! I think I'd have to say the best muffins I have ever made, whew, big statement! The flavor is amazing and they have a great fluffy texture. Even one's from the fridge heated up in the microwave days later were just as good. I only got nine muffins out of my batter though. I can't wait to make these triple batched and freeze :) In my picture some of them look burnt around the edges but that's just the darkening from the topping.

Oh my gosh, those look delicious, Mommyluvs2cook! The best you've ever made, huh? That's quite an accolade! Now I can't wait to make them. Did you dice the apples, as the recipe submitter suggests, or grate them?

I was hoping for something good and yummy and here it is! Goes perfect with my coffee this morning! Sometimes you can't knock the vintage recipes. As much as I love trying new recipes, I find that I always fall back on the old ones.

Frankie, the hardcover Betty Crocker cookbook I got as a wedding shower present was falling apart from use, so I copied down the recipes we liked and threw the book away. Stupid! I just checked the new, paperback, published in 2011 version I have and the recipe is not in it (I hate paperback books, especially cookbooks). I hope you have better luck finding it in your edition.

DIZ3, I like making new recipes, too, but also seem to fall back on the old tried and true ones. I've always said I get the best recipes from those community cookbooks and from friends. :)

Bakerme I peeled and diced the apple up really small. I guess I don't try enough "old tried and true" recipes lol. I need to invest in an old Betty Crocker book I guess!

My old Betty Crocker was printed in 1950 and I did find the recipe. Betty called them "Apple Muffins." Not too much difference. Feeser added more apples and substituted the oil for shortening. Otherwise - pretty much the same! :-)
My edition is pretty beat up, Bakerme, but I find I refer to good old Betty quite often. :)

Frankie, I don't know what I was thinking when I threw my old Betty Crocker away. Since I wore it out learning to cook, I guess I felt like I had outgrown such basic stuff. Stupid me! It's such a good basic cookbook and I don't like the "new and improved" version as much as the old one, but at least it still has some of the basics that I refer to when I'm not sure of a recipe or technique. Live and learn!

You might be able to find one on eBay. I wanted one and my mom wouldn't part with hers. She gave me the one I have for a birthday present and my sister found it for her on eBay.

Thanks, Frankie, I never buy anything on eBay, but will check Amazon.

YIKES!!! Check out the prices on the new condition Betty Crocker cookbooks that are the same as the one I threw away:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0307098001/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_new_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1461843443&sr=8-10

I like hardcover books in brand new condition, but I'll have to pass on these "deals" and see if my local library has a copy that I can check out.

That is ridiculous, Bakerme! Mine is the same as FrankieAnne's. My sister and I split my mother's cookbooks. She got the Betty Crocker! It was always my favorite, so I went to E-bay and found an original 1950's First Print edition. It was in excellent condition and maybe around $25. That's been a few years ago. Like you, I don't use E-bay anymore.

Holy Cow! Those must be some recipes!! I was considering adding this cookbook to my collection, but never mind!!! Do they not print many of these new anymore? I just don't understand that price :( Well so much for any newbie cooks who were wanting to get a hold of this cook book.

I know that y'all say you don't use Ebay anymore but I just found it for $26 there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-BETTY-CROCKERs-RED-PIE-COOK-BOOK-5-RING-HARDBACK-1969-1977-nice-/282015000993?hash=item41a96769a1:g:gNEAAOSwlfxXG8mC

They come in 3 different styles: hardback, softcover, and 3-ring binder. The ring binders are expensive! It's been a long time since I researched them, but I believe the recipes in the newer editions are different. More modern recipes and updated to to reflect current cooking standards. Mind is just the standard hardback.

Mine is definitely not in new or near new condition. The binding is a bit torn on the spine but all the pages are intact. I know my sister and she would have only spent around $20 but they gave it to me about 10 years ago. I haven't checked prices lately.
I buy on eBay quite often and have been for about 12 years or so. I only had one transaction that didn't work out. I bought a book from a guy and then he said he couldn't find it. :-P He gave me my money back though.

Frankieanne, if you like vintage cookbooks, I highly recommend old Farm Journal cookbooks or magazines. Same 1950s time frame. Talk about timeless treasurers!

I have a Farm Journal microwave cookbook I wouldn't part with. I used to have the main cookbook they put out but it got water damaged (along with a bunch of other cookbooks) when a pipe broke in an apartment I once lived in. I should buy another.
I found the Betty Crocker 1950 cookbook was re-issued in 1998. Same book - but a lot cheaper than buying the original.

That Muffin looks scrumptious Michelle!! Yum! I bet that would be perfect in a 6 count jumbo muffin tin. :)

I wouldn't shop at Amazon for any vintage stuff, they are outrageously priced for everything I've looked at in the past. I bought a group of vintage craft books on ebay for $20. Even at thrift stores and flea markets they're around $5-10 a piece. I got 20 books in the group, so it was a steal! Just recently Amazon was selling a discounted coffee maker/burr grinder I wanted, it was between $500-600--used! New it was under $200. Luckily the company came out with a new and approved version for $300! Amazon can be such a rip off, so be careful. :)

I agree Shona! Amazon (we use Amazon Prime) is good in so many ways (believe me I buy about 85% of my stuff through them) but some things can really be a rip off. BUT what you do buy through amazon, PLEASE go through Amazon Smile!!! A very small percent will go to a charity of your choice :)

I don't think we get Smile in Canada, will have a look though! :) I think the used stuff on amazon is mostly sold by other people and businesses? That's probably why it's priced so high! You can get great deals on Amazon for new things of course :) I like how they ship out right away, and even for me--out in the sticks- the packages arrive quickly :)

Yep, Amazon Smile, Michelle. Proceeds go to my favorite local handicapped/senior doggie rescue group. :)
Amazon is really great for people who live in the sticks. I probably buy 50/50 from Amazon and eBay.
I buy vintage knitting books on eBay, Shona. Great deals for knitting books from the 30's and 40's and other vintage books on eBay. I'll be heading there later today to look for that Farm Journal cookbook. Thanks for bringing that up. :)

Oh my gosh, I try not to go on e-bay too often as I find needlepoint and plastic canvas pattern books all too often but rarely make anything these days, lol. I have a slew of 1970's plastic canvas pattern books, very rare ones. I just recently saw a book that I have sell on Etsy.com for $90! I might just have to sell some of them. ;) I made my daughter a plastic canvas doll house with all the furniture, and baby blocks and toys when she was little. A friend of mine makes money on Etsy selling vintage pyrex and Tupperware etc...All she does is hunt in Thrift stores a few days a week! Seems like a good job if you have great thrift stores around you! ;) Some people go crazy for pyrex, I was offered $40 by my friends Mom for my pink pyrex mixing bowl from the 1940's. I should of sold it to her because it broke a few months later, dang!
Goodluck finding the Farm Journal book!

I buy very very little online, mostly books and a few baking supplies, and only a few times a year, if that. I gave up buying clothes online years ago because they *never* fit right and were of poor quality. They sure looked nice in the pictures, but I got tired of paying the return shipping costs to send them all back.

Another good source for books is abebooks.com

They have everything from out of print books to new releases and prices run the gamut from dirt cheap to oh my gosh expensive.
