    Manhattan Clam Chowder

I have had 3 cans of clams sitting in the pantry for some months with all the good intentions of making some Manhattan Clam Chowder. Not sure why but yesterday was the day and I hunted up a recipe that sounded just right to me. I chose Fluffy24's Manhattan Clam Chowder because it was a family recipe that survived the generations from a family living along the ocean. That sounded the right pedigree to me and the result was as good as I had hoped.

Fluffy24's method of cooking is similar to my own so this was also an important part of why I chose this recipe. The directions use small steps to let the ingredients harmonize a step at a time. This allows the cook to be prepping and cooking all the way along. I liked the small tips included like "If the broth hasn't thickened lightly, smash a few potatoes against the side of the pot, and cook 1 to 2 minutes more to release the starch." A thoughtful addition and helpful to less experienced cooks like myself.

I was true to the proportions but did make a bit of a deviations. First was with the peppers. My family does not like green bell pepper. I substituted two Anaheim peppers and a fresh jalapeno. This does put a bit of "cha cha cha" into the Manhattan scene but No hay daƱo no hay falta. I also added a tablespoon of dried marjorum as I like this with tomato base. I only had two cups of clam stock available so I supplemented the lack with Clamato juice.

The recipe made 16cups. I froze 10cups to bring out for the next family gathering, left some out for my lunches next week and some to share with my dear father-in-law. Even my Mr. SuchAFuss gave this an "EXCELLENT" rating which puts this recipe in the keeper box.

I have NEVER made clam chowder! My husband has always claimed to not like clams but low and behold, I made him try one a couple weeks ago and he loved it! What a doofus! Anyway, thanks for the reminder that I can make clam chowder for the family now. Yay, and by the way this looks delicious!
