I make something like this too, but I like to add a bit of chicken stock to the last 20 minutes and add some thinly slice carrots. I'm making it with corned beef this week :)
I think I'd skip the powders too. It has the fresh onion and garlic already. :)

Hello Cosmicmother, good idea on the carrots, will do that next time. I don't think it lost flavor not using the dried, still pretty tasty!!

Manella, that is very similar to the recipe I grew up with, and one of my favorite ways to make cabbage.

Manella, I eyeball the ingredients, so the amounts I listed here are my best guess:

1-2 strips bacon, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
    1 small onion, chopped
1 medium head cabbage, cored and sliced as you would for cole slaw
    black pepper, to taste

In a large pot, cook the bacon over medium heat until just crispy. Add onion and cook about 10 mins. Stir in cabbage and cook and stir another 10 mins. Season, to taste, with pepper. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer, stirring occasionally, about
30 mins. more or until cabbage is cooked to desired degree of doneness.

Note: Try to use very lean bacon so the cooked cabbage isn't greasy. If you don't, drain off some of the bacon grease before adding the cabbage.

    Enjoy!
