Saturday's Steak House

  • chuckieb 6 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! Just a quick 'hello' and "Good Morning"!!!! Gotta go make some egg salad sandwiches for the road. Will try to head out for Jim's Dad's cottage in an hour or so. Crossing our fingers the weather co-operates. We're simply hoping for a window of opportunity so Jim and his brother can get those snow guards on the roof before the freezing rain or snow makes things too dangerous.

Have made reservations at "The Peppermill Steak and Pasta house"
    http://www.thepeppermill.ca/
for dinner tonight. We've never been there and they get good reviews on Trip Advisor so I'm looking forward to it.

Am bringing along my laptop of course so might get to check in this afternoon. Wishing everyone a great weekend!

    Good Morning Everyone. Happy Saturday.

I too hope the weather cooperates for you all today Janet. It would be nice to get the task done. The steakhouse looks yummy. Nice menu and something for everyone and big or little appetites. Since I can never make up my mind the Mixed Grill looks ideal. Travel safe.

Guys are suppose to seal the driveway and walkway today and I'm going to ask them to do the back lanai today as well. I don't want to wait a few more days for that. I want it all done today even if it means being trapped in the house for several hours (it takes a few hours for it to dry enough to walk on). If I have to I'll crawl thru one of the front windows to get out. They are low enough. I'm tired of looking at patio furniture piled up in my house, I can't clean and it's driving me nuts.
Made my list for Thanksgiving and list of items I need from the store which I'll get Monday. I already have my turkey breast, just need to thaw it and will take it out Monday as well. Going to have turkey breast in the crockpot, a small tray of stuffing, gravy, sweet potato, green beans, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Very "traditional".
Will probably have grouper tonight for dinner and will pan sear it with a lemon butter sauce. SIdes to be decided later.
I've been reading a great book ... "American Wolf". It's an education and very interesting read about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and in particular will follow one of the alpha females. I seen it mentioned in a magazine and then looked it up and thought "oh wow, this is different" and jumped right on it.

    Good morning Janet.

Have a nice trip. Hope the weather cooperates and you get the snow guards up. Does Jim's brother live close to the cabin? Hope your dinner experience is wonderful!

I have forgotten which laptop you bought a while back. Our daughter now owns a MacBook Air. We had bought her a Windows based computer a bit over a year ago to work on online courses toward a degree. At the time the school required a Windows based computer, She won the MAC in some contest. It has Windows programs so she can use it for school. Since she is an Apple fan from way back, she is ecstatic.

Today is going to start out warm (61 F) and deteriorate as a cold front moves through. We have a wind advisory -- no hunting in the woods! So tonight's F.D. fundraiser should be a bit on the cool side. Which reminds me I have to bake desserts for it and something for tomorrow's pot luck. Guess the housework will wait.

Morning!! Have a safe trip Janet, hope the weather stays nice for you! I couldn't open the Peppermill site unless I upgraded something on my computer, and with my laptop on it's last leg, I'm passing on that lol. Enjoy!

I don't blame you for wanting to get everything sealed and over with Linda! Lol, be careful climbing out of your windows :P Your Thanksgiving menu sounds wonderful! Yum on the grouper in lemons sauce also!

We are having cooler weather come in tonight also Karen. Should be nice!! I'm tired of it being in the 80's and not feeling at all like Fall/Winter. Supposed to stay in the mid 60's to low 70's for a while.Time to open the doors and windows, yay!

Bri has a tournament today about an hour away. They just left a little bit ago but Caiden and I stayed back since he has basketball pictures at 12:30. We will head up there after that if they are still playing. They probably will be, but every tournament is different though, so we don't know.

Don't have dinner plans tonight since we don't know the schedule, will probably be dinner out! Have a great day everyone!!

SP Linda. Your traditional Thanksgiving menu is great. We are also doing a traditional menu except using a whole turkey since daughter and GS will also be here. It will be on Friday, daughter is working on Thanksgiving.

Boo on the patio furniture explosion in the living room. When we were redoing the kitchen / constructing the sun room, we had one path through the living room to the kitchen-to-be, and a bunch of paper plates / disposable tableware so we didn't have to locate dishes, or wash them in the bathroom sink!

LOL at crawling through the window to exit your house! As long as no one drives or walks on the driveway!

Mice have decided it is time to arrive. We have caught two in a trap on the top of the basement steps so far. I had seen a gray one out of the corner of my eye, so we baited a traditional wood trap. Mauser is at the end of the hallway staring at the basement door, so I imagine she smells one.

Hi Michelle. Busy day, as usual - ha ha. Eating out sounds fine with me.

It is clouding up outside, so I imagine rain is on the way. Wind has picked up. Good day to stay indoors. At least until the fundraiser this evening. We have to take the raffle tickets over in a bit.

Yea, the sealing has begun and boy-oh-boy are the fumes awful! I can smell the stuff in the house. It should dry in about 2 hours or so, enough to walk on, but I can't drive on it for a few days. It's not so much leaving that is the problem but it's coming back with hot tires and he will do another coat tomorrow. I took the screen out of one of the front windows because they sit low and I, even DH, can easily climb out if we have to.

It's a gorgeous day here. The kinda day you want the windows open too. The Cicadas are buzzing away, the sun is warm, it's slightly cool with a very gentle breeze ... a cold front is suppose to move in though Sunday but I'm sure it still won't be cold enough to turn on the heat.

Enjoy your fundraiser tonight Karen. What goodies are you making for it and your potluck? I would love to do a whole turkey Karen, I enjoyed making turkey stock and turkey soup but since I don't have the freezer room I use to I don't do it anymore. Someday I'll have a little freezer again. Good luck catching the mice, yep, it's that time of year.

Good luck to Bri with her tournament today Michelle. Dinner out sounds like a great plan! We ate out last night so it's home cooking tonight.

Drive safely, Janet! We are getting freezing rain at the moment so I hope you missed it when you drove past here. The menu looks very good lots of things to choose from. I hope Jim and his brother are able to finish up the cottage without rain, snow or freezing rain.

I hope they can get everything sealed today, Linda. I know what you mean about furniture and stuff being out of place. It would drive me nuts as well. Your Thanksgiving meal is perfect for two people.

Congrats to your daughter for winning a Mac Laptop, Karen! I would be ecstatic as well! Ugh on the mice coming in!

You have another busy day ahead of you, Michelle. I bet Caiden's basketball pictures will be cute. Be careful driving if you go to the tournament.

As I mentioned before it is freezing rain right now. Den went out and put some salt down in the laneway etc. in case someone fell. I will have to check the radar and see if they are calling for freezing rain in the Haliburton area where Janet and Jim are headed. I dread the thought of him and his brother up on the roof finishing putting up the rails in this wet cold weather. I hope they can get it done quickly without having to go back to the cottage in the morning. Den did the little bit of shopping we needed doing this morning and after that, he brought MacDonald's back. My biscuit or whatever you call it on my bacon egg McMuffin was cooked to a crisp and hard as a rock! I have never had that happen before. The inside was cooked to perfection so that is was I had. Den is cleaning the house today the hardwood floors are dusty and the kitchen and bathrooms need steam cleaning. I will do the counters and toilets and the other dusting around the house. Den is having his normal cheeseburgers and fries and I am not sure what I am having yet. The Beef Barley Soup was wonderful and I will do a review in IMI 11 as soon as I am able.

    Wishing everyone a great day!

I looked on the Radar and it looks pretty clear where Janet and Jim are going, thank goodness! They will have to drive through a swath of freezing rain but once they get through that it is clear. Yeah!

Hi Joce. Ick! on your freezing rain. Bummer Janet and Jim have to drive thru bad weather but good they are not having it where they are headed. Yikes on the bad biscuit at McDonalds, at least you were able to eat the middle part. One of the "fluke" things that happen but it stinks when you are on the receiving end. Someone recently was served a glass of water at a restaurant (not here though but somewhere in FL) with a frog in it. One of those little ones. Weird things happen but then again someone may have even put it there to get a free meal or initiate trouble.

Ugh on the fumes, Linda. Hoping everything works out well and you do not have to escape thru the living room window!

Are you living in a condo? I am not familiar with HOA living, but after our rural lifestyle it would take a lot of adjustment. My best friend from high school is in one, very nice, lots of room for living / dining, but almost no kitchen storage. I decided I would have built in storage put in the living room area and still have to sell most of my dishes. Then again, I should get rid of a lot of stuff, anyhow. I have pack rat tendencies, I guess.

Hi Joce. Ick on freezing rain - it is one of my least favorite weather events. It sticks to the trees and ground worse than ice or sleet. With horses, we have to feed and water regardless, so keep cleats for our winter boots in order to traverse the ice. And I am the world's worse on ice. It takes me forever to creep out to the barn -- ha ha. Hate it when I get a burnt offering at McDonalds.

Rain is moving in, not a lot but some rain would be good. It is down to the mid 40's F now so we are in for a cold night.

Made two brownie recipes -- one is NOT setting like it should so may not be good. The other should be OK. May just grab some fruit for a fruit plate tomorrow if the brownies don't work!

We're safe and sound and in Haliburton. BIL and SIL just arrived so I have to go greet them but I wanted to tell you Linda, that you had mentioned that Wolf Book previously and I thought it sounded interesting so put a hold on a copy at the library. I'm #2 in line. :)

I had to giggle at the thought of you crawling through the window to get out of the house Linda. :) Hope you get the entire project done today. I HATE stuff being piled where it's not supposed to be too! Both your Thanksgiving meal and your grouper sound most delicious! I love the sound of Cicadas.

No Karen, Jim's Brother lives just as far away from the cottage as we do except in the opposite direction. LOL. I bought an HP Pavilion laptop. I'm quite pleased with it. Have fun at the fundraiser tonight! A shame if you have trouble with your brownies. :(

Hope Bri has fun at the tournament Michelle.

Thankfully the roads weren't TOO bad Joce. Sweet of you to worry about us and track the weather. We hit a couple of icy, slushy spots but Jim drove the speed limit and for the most part things were fine. Jim and his brother don't actually have to get up on the roof this time to do these snow guards. Bruce brought along a couple of step ladders so they can work on those from the deck. What a shame on your McD's brekkie! On occasion something like that happens to us but we always eat 'in' the restaurant so can just bring it to the counter to trade for a fresh one. Much easier than having to drive back!!

Jim, Bruce and Laura have headed to the cottage. The job is a two person one. Laura says she's going to oversee it! LOL. There is no heat on at the cottage and there is an Ottawa Sens Game on here at the Motel so I elected to stay in the room and watch hockey. It's tied 1-1 at the moment.

Our development is mostly single family homes Karen of varying sizes. There are a couple sections that have duplexes (two smaller homes connected to look like one big home). The windows in the front of the house come down to my mid thigh (it's the spare bedroom that faces the front). The front is dry enough now to walk on if we have to get out. The guy will come back tomorrow to put another coat on and then it's all done but has to dry again. Association living has it's pluses and minuses for sure. Pluses are the grounds are maintained including what is officially our yard, we have an amenity center that has two pools, a fitness center, two clubhouses with kitchens, outdoor grills, a library, tennis courts, bocce courts, and a playground for children. Minuses are someone is always fighting with someone about something, the board can be difficult or not responsible, you pay for things you are not using, you can not do whatever you want with your property (which doesn't bother me), and you have to share amenities.
Yum on the brownies! I hope the one sets up for you.

Glad to hear you arrived safely Janet. Good for you hanging out in the motel. If you not needed no sense going. I hope you enjoy the wolf book when you get it, I'm finding it fascinating. When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone they were brought down from Canada.

Glad you are safely at the hotel. If there is no heat and I could not help, I would curl up with a good book or watch TV., also.

HOA rules are useful in some ways, I guess, no pink grass or old jalopies....ha ha. It would drive me up a wall to not be able to put up a fence or plant what I wanted or no gardens....etc. HGTV's Love it or List it has issues on their renovations due to the HOA problems and zoning snafu's. We have no codes here and no zoning, which can be okay or a real PIA. Not having to maintain my yard could be a plus, altho I would miss using the Zero Turn!

The pumpkin brownies were good. The other ones were icky. Wayne said they tasted good and would eat them. I may frost them later and take them as an anonymous-contribution dish at the church potluck, and pick up some fruit as my official contribution. Ha ha. I should have started making some earlier or even yesterday.

Have a nic day. See you later.

Tell me more about the library in your development Linda! How fun! I'm feeling a tad guilty that I didn't go along with the others to the cottage but it honestly held no positives for me so I think I'm better staying put. It's starting to get dark now and they're not back yet. Hope they didn't run into troubles. :(

Thanks Karen. That makes me feel a little better. :) Pumpkin brownies sound nummy.

Sens lost to Arizona 3-2. Boo.

One of the rooms in one of the clubhouses has several book shelves and people bring in books they have read for others to take. It's great, there are lots of books. People also bring in DVDs, puzzles, magazines. Someone use to alphabetize the books but not anymore. I've found a few good reads. It depends on what you like to read. I too have donated books.
