Saturday's Supper!

  • chuckieb 8 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! Jim and I are having friends over for dinner this evening. We've got to clean the house this morning and then I need to prep dinner and set the dining room table. Our very last Ottawa Senators Hockey Game of the season is on at 1 p.m. (A very silly time for a game, but....). So hopefully, I will feel we have everything in a good state that I can watch the game. We shall see.

I bought some nice aged cheddar and will serve it alongside some celery thin crackers I got recently and some Genoa salami for appys. I did also buy a bag of shrimp and may end up doing shrimp cocktail, but again....we'll see. :)
Entree is Roast Hickory Smoked Ham with roasted potatoes and gravy and asparagus sprinkled with truffle sea salt and dessert is a Maple walnut Whiskey sauce over ice cream. Pretty easy menu really.

-8C/17F here this morning and the birds are singing their little hearts out (probably just to keep warm!)

Have a most lovely Saturday everyone!

    Good Morning Everyone!

I can't believe how cold it still is in Ottawa Janet ... Brrrrr. Dinner tonight sounds delicious.

Bought new computers yesterday. Wasn't expecting to but DH's is dying and how it's still running is beyond both of our expectations. After lunch, which was great, we stopped in Best Buy to look but ended up buying. So that everything is compatible we got one for me too, printers also. Technology has changed so so much since we last bought computers, everything is wireless and there is no big huge tower, just a small box about the size of paperback book and not as thick. Since we are user and not "techie" people we are having the Geek Squad come out in two weeks to set everything up and sync stuff. That's our vacation this year. LOL! Started cleaning my home office up and will work on it more today. Should be done by Sunday.

Since we had a big lunch out and wasn't that hungry for dinner I heated up a frozen portion of shredded turkey and gravy for hot open faced sandwiches with steamed asparagus. I was also very tired and too didn't feel like cooking. I slept like a rock last night. Will have the chicken I pulled out of the freezer yesterday today.

Have my eye on a recipe for a ricotta pound cake that I want to make. I have all the ingredients and want to get it going soon before the day gets away from me. I've seen the recipe many times now so it must be good if it keeps appearing on sites and in magazines. http://www.sweetbitesblog.com/journal/2013/11/9/ricotta-cake.html
I've been craving a good, moist, pound-like cake and had made one for Easter but it was dry so I gave the rest to the raccoons. If I'm going to consume unnecessary calories they at least need to be worth it. Right?

Very fun on the new computers Linda! We used to have the old computer with the big tower and all the wires until I retired and my son and hubby got me a Mac as a retirement present. :) I am still using my son's VERY HEAVY laptop that we got him when he started University 7 years ago and it's on it's death bed but still kicking. :) The technology these days is so fun and so portable! I think it's a great idea to get the Geek Squad to hook everything up and get you going. Yum on hot chicken sandwiches and asparagus for your dinner last night. Your kitchen will smell yummy with that Ricotta cake baking!

Had Poached eggs on toast and fried tomatoes for brekkie. Off to start cleaning the house.

    Good morning ladies:)

Janet, lovely menu for your dinner guests! The maple whiskey sauce sounds divine..Rick loves whiskey sauce over bread pudding:) Wow on 17F! It's 62F here at the moment..rain is on the way as well...
Yeah, I have always wanted to stay at The Gray Whale..we have been to FT Bragg dozens of times and passed it on the way to the beach house we stayed at..wanted to try something different..I like the Sunset room, it's on the very top, has it's own balcony and facing the ocean..and there's nothing like seeing the sunset over the ocean:)

Linda, I did get a lot of office work done yesterday..I need to buy some more file folders before I can continue..I really need to go thru our file cabinets and box up 2015 files...sigh...filing is soooooo much fun:(
Yum..hot turkey sandwiches are my favorite..especially with mashed potatoes and gravy:)

Rick has a hair cut this am..then off to do a spring job in Biggs..then back to our cozy home and kitties..:) Love being home on a rainy day..we'll probably watch a movie..

OK, dinner will be tacos..Rick wanted to go out for a burger last night..we went to Izzy's up here http://www.izzysburgerspa.com/ ..he had a pastrami burger (yuck) and I had a turkey burger , we shared some onion rings. It was ok..we just don't have any good restaurants up here!

Need to get this day going..talk when I get back:)

    Have a splendid Saturday:)

Here's my ice cream topping recipe that I'm trying.
    http://www.oprah.com/food/Whiskey-Walnuts-Recipe?cid=pi_omag_icecream_topper_walnuts_maple_syrup
It smells good, and I figure, corn syrup, maple syrup, walnuts, whiskey...how can it go wrong? I'm pretty well set and Jim is just finishing off the floors so I guess we do have time to watch the hockey game. :) All I have to do later is cut up the potatoes, make gravy , saute the asparagus and make up the appy tray. I don't think I'll bother with the shrimp.

Sounds like your day is well organized and going well. The Walnut topping for ice cream looks heavenly! My mouth is watering for some now.

Home office is looking good. Papers all just about cleaned up and looks like I'll have time to start going thru files and tossing old stuff. I guess it's turning into a "Spring" cleaning type of venture.

    Hope your team wins!!

What model computers did you end up buying, Linda? Wayne has a Toshiba bec. he has one program he can't run on Mac. I have a MacBook Pro. We had to buy a new printer so went to B.B. And looked at Epson and Brother. Ended up buying a top of the line Brother that did both laptops and tablets. Spent three times as much as intended, but it works well. The old printer was like a cartoon -- it spit out pieces of plastic and the print was not even. After getting the new one, it behaved perfectly. Go figure!

Janet, your menu is wonderful. And not extremely difficult, which I like! Enjoy the game!
Wayne's buddy could take Fritz, but he lives by a busy road and Fritz dive bombs out through a hole in the fence...he has lost dogs to traffic before. So we will likely board him at the kennel.

Marie, the closest nice restaurant is about 25 miles from here. The one we used a lot was in Edgar Springs and closed finally....it was good but basic food. There is Cross Creek Bar and Grill about 18 miles away, it is also basic food, but the entry ramp gets slick in rainy weather and Inwould have to enter way around thru the smoky bar area. So we don't go that often unless the weather is not snowy or rainy. St. Robert has Coltons, Panera, Culvers, Ruby Tuesday, Bulgogi House, the new Japanese one, and Cracker Barrel.

Wayne twisted his knee so he is working on files instead of repairing fences in the pasture we want to put the horses in. My kitchen is a state of despair but it is coming along slowly, we are a couple of beat up old timers -- ha ha!

Daughter has a job at a new store opening nearby, so will pick up GS Sunday morning. Middle GS is going into the army this month so the youngest is on his own in the morning until we pick him up.

Time to fix lunch...late! See you later.

Ottawa Sens over Boston 6-1 at the moment. Whoop! Sounds like you have had a very productive day Linda!

LOL @ your old printer spitting out pieces of plastic Karen! That's hilarious! Ouch @ Wayne's knee. What kind of store is your daughter going to be working at? She was at the Library prior right? Is she keeping that job as well?

We're back..it's only sprinkling at the moment...

Karen, yeah, we're a good 25 miles away from any decent restaurants as well:( Guess that's the price we pay for living in such a small community.
Oh dear on Wayne twisting his knee! That HAS to be painful..

Thanks for the whiskey sauce link Janet:)

Janet, she is at Dollar General. It is a more demanding job physically and I am a bit concerned. No, she is not at the library.

Marie, yes it is the price you pay. We would not live any where else, though.

Karen, I agree:) Although I'd like to live on a few more acres, with less tall pines..I'd love to have a nice garden..we just don't have the sun or good soil here. While we were in Biggs this morning, this couple had 3 acres..a few trees, big oaks, and a place for a huge garden..the also had an almond orchard in the back..it was so quiet..chickens running around, a beautiful dog named Roxie. It was picture perfect....I don't care for Biggs, but they had a beautiful piece of property:)
