blinds

Tell me about the blinds you use. I'm looking for the cheapest easiest way to blind bake. Beans could get expensive. I hate to waste food and I understand that after about 3 uses the beans will go ransid.
Are the metal weights sold in the store especially for blind baking worth the money?

I don't often make a one crust pie that I need to bake it first other the lemon meringue... most of them you put the filling in and then bake the whole thing like cherry or pumpkin pie... so I don't know .... I also didn't realize the beans went rancid....

I don't know about the rancid either. It is just something I picked up when reading about blind baking. It might not be true. I do know there is a half baked crust that needs to be sealed when using a moist filling that would make the bottom crust soggy and a fully baked crust, which can be sealed too, for the fillings that don't require baking.

I remember that my Grandmother used the same beans over and over... they were in a jar marked pie beans....

I've used the same beans over and over, just don't get them mixed up with the ones you want to cook. Keep them in a sealed jar in the cabinet.
