Aw, Nuts!

I'm just loaded with questions, aren't I? I was cleaning out a cabinet yesterday and found two unopened bags of trail mix and 2 bags dried fruit. After I moved out of the Phoenix area, a friend sent me a care package from my favorite store (Trader Joe's) because I miss it so desperately!

Anyway, she sent me SO MUCH trail mix. I never got through it all and now I'm sure it's about a year old. I can't find an expiration date. Is it okay to eat it? I'm not too worried about the dried fruit--it should last almost forever, right?

But I've heard that if you eat peanuts that have gone bad, it can cause serious liver damage. I hate to waste this stuff--especially since it's from Trader Joe's! One of them has M&M-like candies in it, so I was thinking of using it to make monster cookies.

Sorry, I didn't see this before. I would toss the peanuts for sure. The other stuff, I am not sure of. My thought is, it is not worth it if you think it may be old, toss it. I'm sure the birds would like a treat.

Thank you!! That's what I'm going to do. With all the snow we have on the ground right now, the birds and squirrels are especially happy to get some 'extras.' Lesson learned! Next time I won't 'save it' -- I'll just eat it and enjoy it when I get it!

if you have more than you can eat next time toss it in the freezer.. that will keep the nuts from getting rancid.. I would keep it in the orginal bag and put that bag into a freezer bag. get out as much air as possible and you should be fine..
