When we drove downtown to get our gelato fix the other night, the line outside the gelato stand was a mile long. I told the kid, hop out, go get the gelato, I'll drive around the block and come back to pick you up.....No problem. I drive off.

She leaves the money in the car. Realizes she might be able to catch me at the corner traffic light so she starts running full tilt towards the light. Mind you the whole city block has tables and hoards of diners outside (Parkshore Grille, the new "it spot" downtown, the place to be seen) It is standing room only. Packed. She is bobbing and weaving and slams right into a man dressed in black with huge bushy black hair.
Huge gasp from the crowd. She is hugely apologetic. "Dude, I'm so sorrry, I didn't mean to run into you, I'm trying to catch my mom.........Hey, you are Gene Simmons!"
He said, "You are SOME Girl." She stutters some more, he shakes her hand, pats her on the back and said "It was okay." She sheepishly walks away.

I come around the block, she is standing there, no gelato, cell phone on the ear. "Mom, you won't believe who I ran INTO!!!" Well, I had to laugh, give her the money and drove around the block one more time.

The gelato was wonderful and she has a fun story to tell when she gets back to school on Tuesday.

That was so cool... Hell I am lucky to run into the owner of the place here in stick ville!

No wait....Years ago... I did run into Freddie Fender! I forgot! He grew up here and was home visiting family... He was sitting in the car waiting for his friend to pick up "beer". If only he had known then ... right? Sad.. he never forgot his roots. And worked to raise money for kids here in the Valley.

I love the ones who "give back." I despise the ones that have that "sense of entitlement" and feel that they are too good to rememer their roots. The Hulk Hogan mess certainly makes my heart ache and through it all, their attitude makes it far more ugly.

I should clarify my position stated above, my heart aches for the family who is coping with a son in a coma and unlikely to recover because the Hulk's teenage son was drag racing and showing off in his fancy car. And now that he is in jail for reckless driving, he is begging his parents to get him out of solitary and crying because he should be on house arrest. He deserves better....any better than the poor young man left in a comatose state at 21?

He is suing the Pinellas County Sheriff's department for mistreatment and for releasing his recorded whining phone calls to the media. No, they don't give anything back to our area of the country. They just feel entitled to break laws because they have money and fame. It stinks.

I had to join this group so I could my 2 cents in on the "Hogan thing"....When I was younger, I dated a famous wrestler.....Let's put it this way, he handed over the title to Hulk Hogan back in the day.....Hulk Hogan was an A** then and is an A** now....His kid should have gotten more than he did and the old man should have had to pay for buying the kids the booze that day.....Okay, that was my 2 cents...:)

This is rather late in the conversation, but I would like to share a "celebrity giving back" story. This is about the Alabama Band. They (3 of the 4) are from Dekalb County, Alabama, and they have been VERY generously supportive of their hometown (Ft. Payne) for the extent of their professional careers which spans over more than 30 years. Randy Owen is the most visible figure, and is seen in town eating at his favorite establishment whenever he is home. They have sponsored all kinds of free events (June Jam being one of them) for years, and have made huge charitable contributions to the towns and county. I have only ever met Randy, eating at the aforementioned cafe, but he and his wife are VERY approachable, and the evidence of their benevolence is apparent in this wonderfully quaint and friendly area. That is one of the reasons that my hubby and I bought property there 15 years ago, and spend every minute that we can there on Lookout Mountain!
