What's in the cake, Sarah?

Oh Gosh, sometimes I have no faith in either my kitchen abilities or the standards of cake mix manufacturers! The third-last time I made a cake from a mix (for the sister) I left out the eggs... oil, water, mix mix mix... gee, why is it so thick? Hmm, better add more water... mix mix mix...

Baked into a lovely, pudding-y brick. New mix.

Okay, WITH the eggs this time... mix, bake, frost, serve up to the ravenous sister... five minutes later -

"Sarah, what did you put in the cake?"
    "Um, eggs, oil and water...?"
    "There's rice in it."
    "RICE??"

Sure enough, the cake had a couple grains of rice scattered through the fully baked layers. I didn't add any, I swear! This last time the cake baked without incident, and as far as I can tell, no rice!
