How to make it

  • In a large, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, brown the beef with the onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic.
  • When the meat is cooked through, transfer the contents of the skillet to the slow cooker/
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6 or 7 hours.
  • Taste and add more vinegar or brown sugar, if desired.

    I like the idea of using the slow cooker so we could work around the house and eat whenever we got hungry! Since the beef was already browned I didn't want to over-cook it, so after a couple hours I turned it to the keep warm setting. My newer crock pot cooks really hot and was boiling on low after two hours!
    The only complaint I have is that it was rather dry, I needed to add a 1/4 cup of water. I'm guessing you need that if you're using the paste over tomato sauce. Perhaps that was just a mistake in the recipe and forgot to include the water?
    I love that there is fresh peppers and celery in this, gives it another dimension of flavor and freshness! I bumped up a few more of the seasonings to tastes as well. Overall a good recipe that I would make again with minor adjustments! :)
