  • 2 lbs venison steak
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
  • 1 pastry crust for top of pie

Directions
  1. Cut the venison into 1 inch cubes and dip in lemon juice
  2. Mix flour and chili powder in a flat dish and dredge the cubes
  3. Heat the oil in a large iron skillet and brown the cubes on all sides
  4. Add the wine and remaining spices
  5. Cover with enough cold water to gently boil for about 30 minutes
  6. Remove the bay leaves
  7. Transfer the meat to a pie dish and put a pastry crust on top
  8. Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 -25 minutes
