Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cream butter and sugar well.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, beating well between additions.
  • Mix 1/4 cup of flour with the dates and nuts.
  • Sift remaining flour with soda.
  • Add milk and flour alternately to the butter mixture.
  • Add dates and nuts.
  • Put waxed paper in the bottom of a large tube pan.
  • Grease the sides and the paper.
  • Pour in the batter.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.
  • While the cake is still hot, pour on your sauce and let it soak in.
  • How to make the sauce:
  • Heat the orange juice in small sauce pan and add the sugar, stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Off the heat stir in the brandy.
  • Pour over the hot cake and let it cool in the pan.
  • Store in air tight container to ripen.
  • Mema called this a Christmas Cake and it is wonderful with a dollop of whipped cream or my cheap version of cream sauce...melted good quality vanilla ice cream.

I also would like to know the amount of milk, and what kind (skim? 2%? buttermilk?). This is very close to a recipe that my mom has made since I was little, and I'd love to give it a try.

What about milk, how much should I use? You didn't list it in ingredients.

Absolutely...it was so good. I'm a sucker for orange and citrus of any kind. This never lasted long at the house and it made great gifts that were graciously "asked for" year after year. Mom always complained at the cost of pecans but she made it Mema's way despite the cost. Some traditions are just meant to be kept.

Mema must have been a wonder! Did you wish Christmas would come early just to eat this?
