This is, honestly, a TOP SECRET recipe in my family and I probably souldn't even post it. During the DEPRESSION, a man offered my grandmother $40 to make him this cake!!! That's how good it is.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups of buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 cups siftted floura

Directions
  1. Combine together buttermilk, baking soda and vanilla.
  2. Let stand.
  3. Beat together, in a separate bowl, crisco, salt, sugar and eggs until creamy.
  4. Sift together, in another bowl, cocoa, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  5. Take the sifted spices and combine them with the sifted flour. FLOUR MUST BE SIFTED.
  6. Take the bowl with the creamed crisco/sugar mixture and gradually beat in flour and spice mixture and the buttermilk mixture.
  7. You want to add 1 spoonfuls of flour then a little buttermilk.
  8. ALWAYS end with the buttermilk mixture.
  9. Beat until smooth.
  10. Bake at 350 degrees in 9 inch cake pans.
  11. Cool.
  12. Frost with your favorite cream cheese frosting.
