How to make it

  • Make date filling below then:
  • Mix together thoroughly shortening and brown sugar.
  • Sift together and stir in: flour, salt, and baking soda.
  • Stir in the rolled oats.
  • Mix thoroughly.
  • Place half of this crumb mixture in greased 13 x 9 1/2 x 2 inch pan.
  • Press and flatten with hands to cover bottom of pan.
  • Spread with date filling(cover with remaining crumb mixture and pat lightly).
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 400 degrees until lightly browned.
  • While warm cut into bars and remove from pan.
  • Date filling:
  • Mix date filling ingredients in a saucepan.
  • Cover over low heat, stirring constantly until thickened (about 10 minutes).
