Ingredients

How to make it

  • Combine Molasses, sugar and vinegar in sauce pan
  • Cook to soft crack stage or 270*
  • Stir once and awhile to keep from burning
  • Remove from heat stir in Butter, soda and salt
  • Stir to blend
  • Pour into a buttered pan and wait ….I said WAIT…until cool enough to handle
  • Grab a Family Member… Butter those hands… gather the taffy into a ball and pull between the two of you until satiny and light. Keep hands buttered to keep from sticking.. It will become too firm to pull
  • Divide into your own ball roll out or twist into a rope and cut into pieces with buttered scissors wrap each piece in plastic or waxed paper
  • Make a date to do again

My Dear Grandpa would make this and we would have taffy pulls. Brings back some fond memories of my childhood. Thanks will keep and try. Wish he could be here pulling the taffy too.

I made this years ago, when I was a kid. It's very good and a lot of fun too. It does bring back memories, just reading about it. I can't wait to try it again.

Well I know it’s a Canadian thing. It really is a lot of fun and Thank you for the suggestion I've added it to the Cooking with kids group. Yes also to your last question. The old saying you say Tomato and I say Tamato. We say Taffy and you say Toffee. We also made Vinegar Candy which I will post as well.

This looks like a fun thing to do with the kids!
Have you put this on the "cooking with kids" group page?
Is Taffy a US thing? Is it like Toffee in the UK?

I made some changes to the recipe to make it more clear on what you are to look for when the taffy is ready to cut

Have never timed it but it will get firm and you can no longer pull that is when you twist into a rope and cut with scissors. Butter the scissors so it won't stick to them.

Sounds delish! "Ah the memories" for me is getting fresh taffy from the State Fair. I've never made it at home. Will have to do this when my daughter gets home from the Lower 48. How long do you have to pull it before cutting? Thanks for sharing your memories...
