Apple Birds Nest

A great apple dessert that's pretty easy to throw together
Ingredients
- For the "birds nest" shopping list
- 4 baking apples(granny's or another tart) shopping list
- 1/2 c. light brown sugar shopping list
- 1/3 c. butter shopping list
- 1 1/3 c. flour shopping list
- 1 c. sugar shopping list
- 2 tsp. baking powder shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. salt shopping list
- 1/3 c. shortening shopping list
- 2/3 c. milk shopping list
- 1 tsp. vanilla shopping list
- 1 egg shopping list
- for clear sweet sauce: shopping list
- 1/2 c. sugar shopping list
- 1 c. cold water shopping list
- 1 tblsp. cornstarch shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg shopping list
- 1 tblsp. unsalted butter shopping list
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla shopping list
- pinch of salt shopping list
How to make it
- preheat oven to 350
- birds nest
- melt the butter
- pour into 8 or 9 in.sq. baking dish
- sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the butter
- peel and slice your apples, smaller than wedges, but not too thin
- place these over the brown sugar
- next, mix the flour, 1 c.sugar, baking powder, 1/2 tsp.salt, shortening, milk and 1 tsp. vanilla, beat 2 minutes
- add the egg, beat 2 minutes more
- pour over the apples
- bake for 40-50 minutes
- for clear sauce
- mix 1/2 c. sugar, cornstarch, cold water, and nutmeg in a saucepan
- bring to a boil over med-high heat, whisking constantly
- remove from heat
- add the 1 tblsp. butter and pinch of salt, mix well
- slice the birds nest into squares, place upside down in individual serving dishes, pour clear sauce over the top
