Cabbage Unrolled

- 1 lb ground meat, (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, or combo) shopping list
- 1 clove garlic, minced shopping list
- 1 medium onion chopped shopping list
- 1 cup chopped celery shopping list
- 1 finely diced carrot shopping list
- salt and pepper shopping list
- 1 cup cooked grain,(rice or barley work nice, wild rice is my favorite) shopping list
- 2 lb cabbage (maybe more) shopping list
- 8 oz shredded sharp cheese,( cheddar or pepper jack are good) shopping list
- Sauce; shopping list
- 2 8oz cans tomato sauce shopping list
- 1 28oz can whole tomatoes and juice, crushed shopping list
- 1 tblsp. brown sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp. worchestershire sauce shopping list
- 1/8 - 1/4 tsp. allspice shopping list
- salt and pepper to taste shopping list
How to make it
- Remove tough outer leaves of cabbage, cut in half, steam 15- 20 minutes, just til tender-crisp.
- Meanwhile, brown meat, drain fat, add veggies, seasoning and cook gently til carrots ar tender.
- Stir in grain.
- Combine sauce ingredients in sauce pan and bring to a boil, reduce heaqt and simmer a few minutes.
- Drain cabbage and cool a bit.
- Cut cabbage into 1/2 inch slices, put a layer of these into the bottom of a buttered casserole dish.
- Place a layer of the meat mixture over the cabbage.
- Pour about 1/3 of the sauce over the meat.Sprinkle with 1/3 of the cheese.
- Repeat layers, top with one more layer of cabbage and the last of the sauce.
- Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes at 350*F.
- Remove foil, bake 10 minutes more, Add remaining cheese, bake until cheese is melted.
- Allow to stand a few minutes before serving.
