How to make it

  • Remove tough outer leaves of cabbage, cut in half, steam 15- 20 minutes, just til tender-crisp.
  • Meanwhile, brown meat, drain fat, add veggies, seasoning and cook gently til carrots ar tender.
  • Stir in grain.
  • Combine sauce ingredients in sauce pan and bring to a boil, reduce heaqt and simmer a few minutes.
  • Drain cabbage and cool a bit.
  • Cut cabbage into 1/2 inch slices, put a layer of these into the bottom of a buttered casserole dish.
  • Place a layer of the meat mixture over the cabbage.
  • Pour about 1/3 of the sauce over the meat.Sprinkle with 1/3 of the cheese.
  • Repeat layers, top with one more layer of cabbage and the last of the sauce.
  • Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes at 350*F.
  • Remove foil, bake 10 minutes more, Add remaining cheese, bake until cheese is melted.
  • Allow to stand a few minutes before serving.
