How to make it

  • Brown ground beef, drain fat well and set aside.
  • In oil, saute onion and bell pepper until just soft.
  • Drain tomatoes and set juice aside.
  • Add tomatoes to onions and peppers and cook 10 minutes.
  • Add beef and the next 7 ingredients and simmer about 20 minutes.
  • Mix cornstarch with the reserved tomato juice.
  • Add tomato juice mixture along with the cooked macs to the beef mixture.
  • Bring just to simmer and pour into a 9 x 13 baking dish.
  • Top with cheese and bake in a 350 degree oven until cheese is slightly brown on top.

    It is a light corn syrup. I have never used a substitute since it is readily available where I live, but I read that you can use this to substitute corn syrup:

    1-1/4 cups sugar and 1/3 cup water, boiled together until syrupy.
