How to make it

  • Pour hot water over baking soda and dates. Let stand until remaining ingredients are mixed. Cream butter and sugar and incorporated eggs one at a time. Mix in dates and water. Add flour and salt. When mixed well, add the black walnuts. Bake 325 oF for 1 ½ hours.

    This was very good! I made it as written except for a few personal preference changes. I used white and brown sugar, and I added 1 tsp. cinnamon and 1/4 tsp cloves. I baked it at 350* for about 50-55 minutes...and it was perfect! Great recipe! I added my photo =)

    My grandmother used to make this for us. We used to spread the "bread" with butter. Nice to see it again, I had lost my recipe. Thanks for th reminder!!!
