How to make it

  • For slow cooker or pressure cooker, place all ingredients together and mix well. heat as instructed.
  • For stove top, saute the onions in a bit of oil till softened, add the garlic and cook a little longer.
  • Add all other ingredients
  • Bring to a boil over hiogh heat, then reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until everything is tender
  • Season to taste as desired when chili is cooked through
  • Serve with a green salad and cornbread

    This was great! However, I made some changes. I pre-cooked dry kidney, great northern and pinto beans - omitted black because I forgot them. I used homemade refried beans. I also omitted the celery, basil, tomatoes and chipotle. Only used half a pound of ground beef and cooked it with cumin, black pepper and chili powder instead of adding at the end. Thank you for sharing!

    This is regular chili and as you know re-fried beans are very pasty and already seasoned with spices and fat, so they add more flavor and some creamy texture than do plain whole beans!
    It's like making potato salad- a ton of recipes for the same thing yet the textures, flavors differ slightly and yet they are all the same in a way!
