How to make it

  • In a heavy medium saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  • Stir in milk and unsweetened chocolate.
  • Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly; continue cooking and stirring frequently another two minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Very gradually, stir about 1 cup of the hot mixture into beaten egg.
  • Return all to mixture in pan.
  • Cook and stir an additional two minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in vanilla.
  • Pour into a bowl and cover the surface with plastic.
  • Chill without stirring.
