How to make it

  • Note: Salt is the secret ingredient that makes this flavorful. I am sensitive to salt and use home canned products. The amount given is just a starting point. You may need to use more.
  • 1. Brown hamburger and onions together in a large pot. Drain off excess fat.
  • 2) Sprinkle 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper over meat and stir.
  • 3) Add remaining ingredients and bring to boil. Simmer 45 min. to an hour. Stir frequently, scraping bottom to prevent rice from sticking. Add additional water as necessary to maintain desired consistency. Also, break up tomatoes while stirring.
  • 4) Taste test: If it tastes bland, gradually add a little salt (and more pepper if desired) to achieve a flavorful broth. Serve with buttered bread.

    " It was excellent "
    eastcoaster ate it and said...
    I made this last week, and we quite enjoyed it.I used ground chicken and pork as that is what i had out.I am guilty of making a couple of changes. I used chicken broth and no water(personal preference) and because i used the ground chicken i added a bit of chopped basil and rosemary, as i like the flavor with chicken.
    Even without the herbs this is a wonderful comforting meal.
    I doubled the recipe cause i made this for lunch for a couple of friends, and there were no leftovers, and i was hoping for leftovers.
    Soup is a favorite in our home and this one is on my regular to make. Delicious!!! I used Italian rice (Abrorio), i cooked it on the side, added to soup bowl then poured the soup over. That way if there are any leftovers it doesn't swell in the soup.
