How to make it

  • Heat oven to 425.
  • In large skillet cook and stir onion in shortening until tender.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Stir in flour, salt and pepper.
  • Cook over low heat stirring until mixture is bubbly.
  • Remove from heat and stir in tomatoes.
  • Heat to boiling stirring constantly.
  • Boil and stir 1 minute.
  • Stir in bologna, carrots and beans then heat to boiling.
  • Pour into ungreased baking pan and place in oven.
  • Prepare dough and drop 9 tablespoonfuls dough on hot vegetable mixture.
  • Bake uncovered 30 minutes.
  • Dough:
  • Measure dry ingredients into bowl.
  • Cut in shortening until mixture looks like meal.
  • Stir in bologna and milk.

    I too was a Navy brat and know exactly what you mean about eating cheap, but we always had bologna in the refrigerator and I was always a happy kid as a result. I loved bologna and still do. Yummy. I eat jalapeno bologna now, but as a kid, good old fashioned bologna and mayonnaise sandwiches or fried bologna and egg sandwiches. Yummers.

    As a kid bologna was all I would eat! That and cold hotdogs.. And your parents in the Navy, at that time they made little money... you ate CHEAP!
