Oliebollen Dutch Donuts Recipe
This is a traditional Dutch recipe handed down from my husband's family--mostly made at New Year's. Really delicious!

Ingredients
  • 1 cake of compressed yeast (.6 oz)
  • 1 c warm milk
  • 2 1/4 c flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 c raisins or dried currants
  • 1 Granny Smith apple finely choppd
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
  • 1-2 c icing sugar for rolling

Directions
  1. Break up the yeast and stir into warm milk. Let stand for 5-10 minutes to dissolve.
  2. Sift flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Stir the yeast mixture and the egg into the flour and stir to mix into a smooth batter.
  4. Stir in the raisins or currants and apple.
  5. Cover bowl and let rise in a warm, draft-free area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Heat oil in deep pan to 375 degrees.
  7. Use 2 spoons to shape dough into balls and drop them carefully into the hot oil.
  8. Fry the balls until golden brown, about 8-10 minutes.
  9. Drain the oliebollen on paper towels then roll in icing sugar.
  10. Arrange decoratively on serving platter then dust more icing sugar over top. Serve warm. Yum!

Do these taste similar to a raised donut, they sound wonderful.


My girlfriend from Holland who lived downstairs from me while living in Germany used to make these often, I loved them! Sooooooooo good, I think I acquired a taste for them... gonna make these soon!!
