How to make it

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water, let stand 5 minutes.
  • Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening.
  • Make well in center of mixtur, add yeast mixture and milk, mixing well. (Dough will be sticky).
  • Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 15 to 20 times. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness, cut into 3 inch squares.
  • Heat 1/2 inch of oil in large skillet to about 370 degrees.
  • Gently place dough squares in oil a few at a time, lightly pressing down with spatula until dough starts to puff.
  • Turn and cook on other side unto barely golden, drain.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with honey.
  • Makes about 3 dozen
  • NOTE: When frying, leave a few in skillet while adding additional ones to absorb the heat so the oil won't overheat and smoke.
