Authentic Mexican Sopaipillas

- 1 package dry yeast shopping list
- 1/4 cup Warm water shopping list
- 4 cups all-purpose flour shopping list
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt shopping list
- 1 teaspoon baking powder shopping list
- 2 tablespoons sugar shopping list
- 1 tablespoon shortening shopping list
- 1 1/2 cups milk, scalded and cooled shopping list
- vegetable oil for frying shopping list
- Powdered Suagr (optional) shopping list
- honey (Optional) shopping list
How to make it
- Dissolve yeast in warm water, let stand 5 minutes.
- Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening.
- Make well in center of mixtur, add yeast mixture and milk, mixing well. (Dough will be sticky).
- Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 15 to 20 times. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness, cut into 3 inch squares.
- Heat 1/2 inch of oil in large skillet to about 370 degrees.
- Gently place dough squares in oil a few at a time, lightly pressing down with spatula until dough starts to puff.
- Turn and cook on other side unto barely golden, drain.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with honey.
- Makes about 3 dozen
- NOTE: When frying, leave a few in skillet while adding additional ones to absorb the heat so the oil won't overheat and smoke.
