Ingredients

How to make it

  • Using a measuring cup, get one cup of sugar.
  • Place 4 cups of water in a pan.
  • Heat the water on the stove until it is boiling.
  • Add the sugar to the water, while stirring. Boil one minute, stirring.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and cool.
  • When the nectar is room temperature, fill your clean hummingbird feeder.
  • Store any leftover nectar in a covered container in the refrigerator for several days.
  • TIPS:
  • DO NOT add red coloring to the nectar. There is enough red on the feeder to attract the hummers. The coloring could be harmful to the birds.
  • Make sure your feeder is clean.
  • Hang your feeder in a shady place near some trees or bushes.
  • Replace the nectar when it gets cloudy. Depending on your weather, you may need to clean your feeder and replace the nectar anywhere from a day to a week to keep it fresh.
I no longer use the red coloring but the hummingbirds love this nectar!   Close

I still have hummingbirds coming to my feeder at the end of December here in Southern California. The pictures I posted today were taken last summer and the feeder was filled with commercial hummingbird food. I've had many more hummers with this homemade uncolored nectar than I ever did with the commercial food shown in the photo's above. They love this nectar!!! If you're in the southwest, you may still attract the hummers even in the winter if you put some of this out in your feeder. Enjoy!

I just bought a new hummingbird feeder thinking I had nectar mix left. Nope, not enough. Glad to have this to go by. :)

Thanks for posting. I just read an article in the paper that our humming birds are staying a little longer here in the midwest since we had a lot of rain and warmer temps. I have seen a few in my yard and would love to feed them before they leave. MJ
